What you posted is true but they used the term Station Wagon before 1964.
One earlier ad, I think this 1960:
I'm not sure that law ever applied to passenger vehicles but I don't know if VW had to do anything to get around it for their passenger "Station Wagons" versus Commercial Vehicles.
There is definitely no shortage of 1964-67 Standard and Deluxe Buses in the USA. |

Thanks, it must be a '59 23-Window then as it's showing the 59-61 color schemes |
This ad, with its colorful artwork, was created by another ad agency for VW before Doyle Dane Bernbach got the account.
EDIT: now I am beginning to question my record keeping. I have owned that ad for many years----- cut it out of the original magazine and noted the date and source on the back. Now, reading the ad copy, it refers to service in "all 49 states". Alaska(the 49th state) was not admitted to the Union until January 3, 1959. So did the ad agency jump the gun, or did I write down the wrong date? |

In one 57 add VW refers the micro bus on one page and on the next page calls it a Midget Bus. That's a first for me I never heard of Midget bus before from VW. |

So were Barbara Bush's. Not that it has anything to do with this thread. _________________ Looking for anything from Hal Casey Motors out of Hamburg New York, from license plate surrounds to matchbooks.

Some unofficial " IN HOUSE FACTORY" terms for the type 2 ;
In 1949 the first time "Splitty" was used.
In 1950 the term " BULLI " used,
In 1950 the term " Barn door " used.
1952 Samba model also known as the " SONDER-MODELL "
In March of 1955 all type 2's could also be known as " PEAKED CAP " Type 2's due to the new peeked roof for overhead ventilation. |

I've been driving VW vans since I was nineteen in 1985. Over the years we used all manner of nomenclatures, and I never paid it any mind. But, since I've been here the Samba nomenclature nazis have created in me a form of PTSD that manifests itself as a nails on chalkboard reaction whenever some idjet refers to their van as a bus. I was ok with it for decades, but now I'm all angry and eye-twitchy because of you goons. You know who you are. Who will pay for my psychiatric co-pays?

You can call YOUR car whatever you like.
You can call someone else’s car whatever you like.
If you don’t like someone else calling your or their car what they want, you are a Dickwad. _________________ .ssS! |

I had this same question a couple of days ago. I'm glad I decided to search before creating a new thread.
I'll call your vehicle whatever you call it.
And I have a nifty new wallpaper to try out on my phone. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”
