1.6 n’a diesel. 82 rabbit. Been sitting for a long time. Charged the battery and turned the key to the on position and something shorted in the alternator. It smoked and got hot to the touch. I took off the small 2 wire connector on the alternator and now no more smoke when the key is on. But is my alternator fried? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paolo.

It’s fried.

However, it’s a diesel, it barely uses any voltage to run, just enough to keep the fuel shut off solenoid open. Charge the battery & drive it until you decide to put an alternator in it. I drove a diesel vanagon with a bad alternator from Virginia to NY & back to N.C. with no issues.
