nice- rare and expensive i bet too..
my wife actually is wanting to camp....WTF?, since several yrs ago- her idea of camping was the Holiday Inn... I mentioned my idea of building some removable bench seats, table that could be converted to a bed and she was like...that would be fun.. _________________ Even YOU can prevent FIRES!

Best get her going soon, you don't want to let that "window" of opportunity close on you! _________________ Some people are so busy being clever they don't have time enough to be wise. |

A few years ago we had a fully restored late 50s teardrop trailer. My '90 Civic wagon would pull it easily, you could barely tell it was there.
That's what I would want to pull. I really don't think those larger Westfalia caravans were meant to be towed by buses. It does look cool hooked up at a show but I would not take it down a curvy mountain road. Brakes, suspension, weight distribution, cooling etc would be BIG concerns. |

The airstreams are nice with their rounded corners, but the stock interiors are not as nice as some other makes. I have a '53 Boles Aero that weighs 1800 lbs and have often wondered if a 1600 dp could put it around. I can easily roll in around in my driveway by hand.
Here it is. More photos at: www.bolesaero.com

| the westflaia trailers og brakes sytem was top notch running off the bus brakes sytem with it own master cylinder. The suspension was /is very good You could hardly tell it was there except for steap hills. I will be pulling mine soon with a stock bus, but I dont live near any huge hills so pulling to Cape cod or Maine will be easy. The 1956 westfalia brocher shows a westfalia camping trailer as a option to tow behind the bus, so yes they were designed to be used with VW's.. |

Jim so what show will you bring it to.....
My 65 panel was my tow truck. It has had a 71 westy, 68 typ 34 ghia, 81 rabbit truck, tons of splits and bugs, all this on a non brake trailer. With a 1600 dp and freeway flyer with reduction boxes it would pull anything. Yes stoping was a problem but then again I was trying to stop 5000+ lbs. With brakes on a westy trailer you should have no problems, an Airstream is another story. They're heavy for a Chevy Suburban. |

| I like to bring it to transporterfest if I can find wheel bearling seals for it in time and tow it with the 59. |

Wow that Westfalia trailer was nice.
We picked up a popup motorcycle camper called a Kompact Kamp. Only weighs 350 lbs. You can't see it though behind the bus. I might need a flag for it. It pops up into a double bed which converts to another table. There is an awning out the back and a luggage carrier on the top.

I've got a Timeout that I pull with my Harley. It would be great behind a vw, not as cool as a vintage though.
Just wanted to remind everyone that just because your vehicle can pull it dosen't mean it can control it and stop it.

Hello,
I have a 1965 show bus with original orange and white westy tent. I also have a 1960 westfalia caravan with original orange and white tent. I bought the trailer to go behind my bus and did not realize that the trailer weights 2200 pounds. I was afraid to tow the trailer behind my bus. The bus runs on stock 1641 engine with freeway flyer tranny and stock brakes. Does anyone of you think that the bus can handle towing and stopping? i was amazed to see a picture of a large westfalia trailer behind the westy bus. The trailer must have weighted over 3000 pounds. Here's the picture of my bus and trailer.

These look pretty nice, if you don't care about the retro feel...they were in the latest Hot VW's.

My Kompact Kamp is a mid 80s unit. It looks a little older than their new models show on the attahed link.
I needed something functional as another bed. We have two kids on the Bus is a little crowed with 4 people so the motocycle camper is fine.
I can image towing something over 1000 lbs on a Bus safetly. Does anyone have the stated capacity for a Split Bus?

I got this Serro Scotty for $50 from an old prospector (yes, as in "Gold!"). I had to pay another $50 for the hundreds of books inside. He said I had to get the books to get the trailer.

Hi Mynameismud,
Try:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/type2.php
and check out the "SO 34 Booklet", in the back of that is shown a picture of the Westie camping trailer that was an accessory for the SO 34/35 campers. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
