Does anybody know which is the appropriate one for a Type1 beam. There is apparently a set for both Type1 and Type3's. Where was maico manufactured? The second Maico IMO is the better designed type with its aluminium hub as opposed to the steel version on the first pic.

Hi Al,
I thought the only difference between the Beetle and Typ 3's was the caliper bracket. One had 3 bolt holes and the other had 4 (I think).
Which is earlier? I am not sure, but, the set that Holyoak had on his beetle many years ago were supposedly from one of the Mobil Gas trial ovals, and they were the same as the 2nd picture of yours. I was watching the 1956 Mobil Gas trials video a few weeks ago and you can see the cars fitted with Maicos.
They were made in Germany.
The steel version appears in Empi and PolyPad Imports catalogs in the mid to late 1960's.

G'Day John, thanks for the info mate. So I guess the one we both have is therefore the earlier version... |

They were available for bot Porsche and Volkswagen.
The VW version had a steel hub and threaded 12mm holes.
The Porsche version had an aluminum hub with 14mm studs.
The hubs emulated the brake drums for the car they were intended for.
I have the steel version on my Empi GTV. _________________ The problem with reality is that there's no background music !

Thanks for the info Richard.
I have to say that I have never seen a set on a Porsche.
Does anyone have any pics of them mounted on a Porsche? _________________ ( ⫏ ⫐ )

Richard,do you mean to suggest that this is for a 356 ? This is the only alloy type Maico that's ever been available ! |

I find it hard to believe that someone would downgrade the large drum 356 brakes for a set of Maico's. I don't think the Maico's could handle the stress of slowing down from 100 mph for too long.
Are you sure you are not confusing the Maico's with the 1962 Carrera 2 T6 ATE annular disc brakes shown below?

I've had both aluminum and steel sets. I've seen more aluminum sets from australia and more steel sets from the states (for what that's worth). The steel set that I retained had '53' porche written on the drums and they fit a vw spindle. There are several styles of calipers as well.
Here's my steel set.

Here is a set of aluminium disc brakes fitted to a Porsche 356. They are not Maico, but do look similar. Maybe this is what Richard is getting confused with.

Just seems odd with Porsche's resources and expertise to run Maicos?... |

This is not the article I was looking for.
I was positive I new what magazine it was in, but I was mistaken.
I will continue to look.
Anyway, if you read the text of the ad pictured below, it mentions the Porsche Maico brakes .

Those wouldn't be from the same people who made Maico
Motorcycles would it ? There were out of Germany too.
Wow maybe they are from the same folks..
