| I know this question has been posted here before but I can find the thread on it. I'm taking my car to be painted at Macco... besides the glass what else should I take off the car? |

Maaco is a name. The person that owns the Maaco franchise you do business with is what you need to be concerned with. Good guy, or azzhole Maaco owner, good luck.
The same rule for any paint/body shop. Tell them how you will deliver the vehicle. Negotiate the price for this condition of delivery, or that condition of delivery.
You should expect that the more work you do, the less money you pay. _________________ "A foolish faith in authority is the worst enemy of truth" Albert Einstein - 1901

| Its true Maaco generally is descent at shooting paint (heck, they paint cars all friggin' day, they should have enough practice). Remove everything you possibly can. I also suggest you do your own prep work. This is where a high volume paint shop like Maaco really fails. As many a painter will tell you, the secret to a good , long-lasting paint job is in the prep work. |

| Maaco has several levels of paint jobs, 4 I think. Don't skimp. If you go with one of the cheaper ones ($200-500) you might be real sorry in a few yrs. You get what you pay for with those guys. And I agree, take off as much as you can. |

I drove my 74 Super to Earl Scheib for paint- Here's what I did.
I left the front windshield in, had the interior covered with drop clothes.
I removed the door seals.
I carefully lifted the windshield rubber seal (at the edges) and tucked a piece of rope behind the seal- and taped the edge of the rubber. - I did this so the paint guy could spray as close as possible under the windshield gasket lip. I removed the rope later when the paint was dry and secure.
I removed all the lights and taped the wires.
I already Very carefully masked all the trim pieces / door handles. I wanted tight paint edges.
I covered the interior trunk with a drop cloth. I taped around the edges in the inside. -Over spray protection.
I covered the engine.
I covered and taped the exhaust pieces that stick out.
I covered behind the front vent.
I removed the hub caps.
I wiped all the wheels down with armor all- Over spray protection. Easy off later.
I removed the door seals.
I removed the running boards.
I spaced all the fenders with small washers.
I sanded and prepped the ENTIRE car, TWICE.
Take off what you don't want painted.
If you can't- cover it or tape it.
The manager at Earl Scheib- checked my work and Bumped me up to the next higher paint job at no additional cost. He told me that since they had very little prep work to do and that took more time than actual painting- I had done them a favor.
When I picked the car up later that afternoon ( the bumped me to the front of line also) The manager gave me a pint of the gloss black they used to paint it with (for touch up) and also told me they had painted my door jams too. Overall for $269.00, I was very pleased.
The paint job was good. The shine was about 2 feet deep.
Shiny Gloss Black with Chrome- Nice.
This picture stinks-\
Hope this is helpful.

That's the best thing about maaco, the price is negotiable. The more work you do, the more you will save. Also, their painters get a lot of practice. Some of the owners don't pay the help fairly and turnover is high, so you could get a relatively inexperienced painter. So the individual shops and quality can vary greatly. If you can talk to more than one, it would be a good idea. _________________ "A foolish faith in authority is the worst enemy of truth" Albert Einstein - 1901

This was in 1997.
I've done the same thing more recently.
Except the price went up about $100.00
Earl Scheib always has the 1/2 price coupon. |

In my case no.
I didn't have the interior removed or anything.
They will if you want. You'll have to check on the pricing for that.
If you are going to be bringing in a rolling shell you may be able to negotiate a good price.

Aloha from Hawaii, Long story but here goes...this place has since closed down and my life time paint waranty is now shit. I know you get what you pay for, but this was a family friend and the general manager of the shop and he made all kind of promises, we can do this that blah blah blah...
I stripped down all exterior and interior and just drove down with a front windsheild and 1 seat, lights and rear license, just barely road legal. got to the parking lot and stripped the rest. got it towed home on a flat bed trailer from my AAA.
Sooo heres a follow up to the paint job I had done at Earl Schiebs. $759.00 out the door= 3 coats Blue Saphire Silver Metallic custom mix, 4 coats clear, weld on new nose ridgeline piece, paint all areas trunk, interior, exterior, engine compartment, misc engine tin, minor body work. Job took too long, 6 weeks! First time doing a Ghia, Managers dad died and he had to fly to Samoa for 3 weeks, broke my fuckin ignition switch from some gorilla goon, over sprayed my Konig wheels, to many promises and bullshit follow up. What made this thing work though was the painter, he took real pride in his work and did a real great job because he had and intrest in classic cars. All in all, I am very stoked except for the stress of 6 weeks, but now I am crusing a cool ghia with a one off paint job. Maybe not as killer as some peoples but my budget was what it was. Check the pictures and see what you think. Aloha Mike Roth

Aloha Rusty, My Ghia is a 1968 coupe bought off the Samba in 2002 from Carmel California, then shipped out of Oakland back to Honolulu. Here is a picture of it at the Kuuloa Ranch family day fair before the new paint job.
1-808VW. I sometimes miss the red pearl white paint job. Aloha Mike
