I'm needing to replace the tires on my 1973 Standard Beetle. What's the stock tire size? I need all the dimensions. Thanks! |

I just got a set of Kumho 165 80 R15's and I love them. _________________ "The music moves me, but it moves me ugly"

My tires are mark 165r15. Why don't they have the 80 between the numbers? I didn't know if they were 70,75,or 80. Are all of them 80? |

That's a Euro-metric size designation.
The default aspect ratio was around 82 but it varied between 78 to 82 depending on the manufacturer. 80 is a good all around average ratio to keep in mind for Euro-metric sized tires.
There's an explanation about half way down this page:

The stock size is 5.60/R15 as the manual says. I think the original size is 155, not 165.
I still have 5.60/R15 tires on my 71 super. When I compare them with the tires of my 72 super, they are skinnier. 72 has 165R15 tires. _________________ '71 Super Beetle

IIRC the 155s were the bias ply tires, 165s are the radials (I think that's what it says on my glove box door) _________________ 69 Beetle

I stand corrected What year is that from? I just double checked on my 69, it doesn't give the dual width rating but shows "Max. Load just over 800 lbs. _________________ 69 Beetle

My Mexi came with 155 radials stock. I have 165s on it now, but I am going to put a 155 back in the spare tire well as the 165 is really tight in there. I hink the '73-9 VWs actually came with 6.00-15s from stock, on a wheel rim that was 1/2" wider than previous years (is it a 5" that replaced a 4.5"?). They were bias ply from the factory. Sport Bugs that year came with 175-15 radials. |

The wheels went from 4" to 4.5" around March '72.
Mine is a May '72 car and the sticker in the glovebox gives the bias ply size as 6.00-15 and the radial size as 155SR15. _________________ Scott
