Here's my opinion on Interstate speed and danger:

No-one should be going over 70. Period. End of story, it's illegal. The idiot who breaks that law is, as I've said, an idiot. And a careless one at that. That idiot is putting everyone's lives at risk. There is no excuse for speeding, short of severe emergency situations.

As far as I'm concerned, we slow drivers are helping people. We're forcing those behind us to slow down, and thus reducing the chance of death. No, not death, murder. Hitting someone at 80 on the interstate and causing a death isn't an accident, it's murder. You made a decision to break a law imposed for safety reasons, and as far as I'm concerned, you were trying to kill someone. And as a common murderer, you should be sent to jail for life.

So let me just say this: There is no reason for traveling over 70 miles per hour. It's unsafe, irresponsible and just plain stupid. A vehicle is a thousand+ lb. weapon, and at 70 miles an hour, it'll kill anything in its path. A sudden gust of WIND going 70 miles an hour can break all of a person's bones. Now replace that wind with cold, hard steel, and you've made a death machine.

The speed limit is just that: a limit. That means no more. Don't put the lives of those around you at risk. If you want to live on the dangerous side, play a game of Russian Roulette. Don't put others on the line to suit your needs. That's something we like to call Sadism, and that's frowned upon quite a bit, if I remember correctly.

do you even have a drivers license yet?

Uhm. NO.
im glad you put it as your opinion, cause it is as far from fact as it can get.
im not trying to be a jerk, but heres a link that id like you all to read. its been around a long time, and is old info. im not going to try and sound like a genius on it, just because i read it. YOU read it, and take from it what you will, the truth hoepfully. its a short read and it says it all.
Id like to hear your thoughts once youve read it.

http://www.hwysafety.com/hwy_montana_2001.htm

I think that people in Montana were fine with us driving at 55-60 in the old bus. Pretty courteous drivers there, actually. There are also a lot FEWER cars on the road.
If you drive to different places in the country, you'll see that there are different driving styles. Like what Everett said.
I don't like lumpy cams. I use stock cams.

There's different ways of looking at it, you know.

hehe. Smile i know there are other ways, thats how life is. BUT, there is but one true correct way. as for lumpy cams, nope. i dont like them either. the cam needs to match the engines needs. and stock cams dont do so, with todays gas and ANY head work at all. a little bigger cam helps it breathe, which in turn allows you to drive it a bit harder than stock. which for me, is driving small nut redux at at least 70, and the bus cant break down ever. thats my moddo. my busses have never stranded me.
Wink

It's funny how some people get their knickers in a twist.
This is a SPLIT BUS forum, you know. These vans are famous for BEING SLOW. And some bus drivers on hating on other bus drivers for driving 55-60. Confused

My brother came to visit me, drove up from San Francisco where he lives. Well, actually he was going to a tattoo convention in Seattle, and he visited me too. He was so annoyed at drivers in Oregon and Washington. They wouldn't get over so he could cruise 80 the whole way north. Well, no duh. People don't drive 80mph. The speed limit is 65 rural and 60 or 55 in buildt up areas, and even 50 in Portland. He was all frustrated at how PEOPLE DIDN"T DRIVE LIKE THEY DO WHERE HE LIVES. Around here, the usual freeway speed most cars drive at is about 65-70 south through Oregon and 65 mph from here up to Seattle. You'll be doing a lot of passing if you drive 70, and if you try to drive 75+ you get stuck behind other cars.

He just did not get it.

Anyhow, MM, you can have your one true way, and I'll keep driving the way I like, that I think works well.

Jim's not really concerned with engine cooling because he doesn't actually drive any of his busses. Right Jim?

We should probably keep the oil cooler discussions in this thread:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=271732

I know Jim spends plenty of time riding in the passenger seat of buses retro-fitted with dog house oil coolers...

Why non doghouse?

when i built it, i wanted a 36 hp style fan shroud and figured a factory non dog house was better than a aftermarket doghouse, and being a SP, there was never a doghouse on it from the factory. it has never been an issue, and the motor has always run cool. its actually the same motor i drove to the classic with in 2000, in the westy. it didnt have kadrons then though.

i have had more non doghouse motors than doghouse. in my experience, as long as its a single port, its OK.

WOW you are not well! ...........you are the idiot in the left lane blocking traffic and feeling proud...[paging Dr Freud]......didnt you pay attention in Drivers ed? Heres a little freeway driving education.........Stay out of the left lane unless you are going faster than the person in the lane to the right of you, The speed limit means nothing. You are not the enforcer of the limit anyway. Actually in AZ there is no speed limit per se......its a "reasonable and prudent law". Posted limits are guidelines if you want to get technical....but posted speed is 75 which means DPS allows 75 to 80 mph. New vehicles are totally safe at these speeds. You need to realize that your 50 year old vehicle not designed for high speed driving is the problem.

Okay, let me get two things straight:

-New vehicles are totally safe at speeds in excess of 75, eh? look at this:

You're were driving westbound at 80 miles an hour on your way home from work (around 6:30), and suddenly, I don't know, a car in front of you had a blowout of the front right tire.

They are suddenly pulled to the right, hit the car next to them, and that car's front left tire is burst. The second car turns the wheel hard to the right, in an attempt to maintain control and evade the first car, but over-steers, and the car slides into a 45 degree angle (meaning it is no longer possible to recover from the spin, and it's going to keep going). At this point, the car has totally lost control, and spins, hitting the car to their right with their rear-end, and smashes their back left side, swinging the rear of the car to the right.

This car manages to maintain control at first (by properly maintaining a firm hold on the steering wheel) until the car on their left hits them again, and they are shoved into the next lane, into the car in the far right lane. The the car on the far right is pushed by the force of the other cars into the guard rail with the front right side of their car. They are deflected, and ram the car to their left, and that car is easily forced in that direction (due to the popped tire on the left) they end up totally blocking the available lanes.

This happens not very far in front of you, and you need to react fast. Unfortunately, due to the glare from the setting sun (and your exhaustion from work), you don't recognize that there was an accident until 2 seconds after it occurred; you just thought someone was changing lanes. You're in the left middle lane, (behind where the now spinning car was) and can do three things:

-Swerve out of the way
-Brake
-Any combination of the two.

If you were to brake, (assuming you have good brakes and tires with a small amount of wear) you would travel about 537.59214435762867 feet, and for approximately 10.383168 seconds before coming to a complete stop. (Factoring in reaction time, brake engage time, and assuming you're going in a perfectly straight line) That's about a football field and 5/6. Almost 2. I'd say that's almost surely hitting the cars, wouldn't you?

If you were to swerve towards the ditch (it's not steep, don't worry) and simply release the accelerator, you'd travel about 128.74752 feet in a second, then two feet less per second every second after that. (If you just cruised this way, you'd take around 1.04352 minuets to come to a complete stop) Human reaction time to anticipated events is typically .5 seconds (after sensing a need to react), and since you knew you were going to drive off the road, we'll give you that reaction time. So once you swerved to the left, you'd travel about 64.35235225 feet before your brain told you to swerve away from the guard cables. since you're only going between 20.46173340864472 and 30.46173340864472 feet, (assuming you're making a sharp 40 degree turn to get out of danger quickly, as you're pretty close to the accident at this point) you'd hit the cables between 7/44 of a second and 9/38 of a second after you turned. That's between .16 and 0.24 seconds.

Forget getting out of this situation alive, it'd take a miracle. Hitting a guard rail or cable between and 73.67 and 79.4 mph isn't something you walk away from.

In the same situations, a car going 60 would stop in a straight line in 330.43871720116615 feet, and if it swerved would go only 44 feet in the time before they reacted. they'd hit the cables at around 59 miles per hour. not exactly fun, but survivable. The cables would give enough to keep you alive. death is likely, but less likely than if you were driving at 80.

Aaaaaaanyway, on to my next point:

Wait, wait wait. Did you just say that the speed limit means nothing? You really are an imbecile, aren't you? How unintelligent must you be to really think that a speed limit serves no purpose? It shows the maximum safe speed (and/or legal speed, in most cases) on the road you're traveling on.

Unfortunately, people in general don't care about safety, and have no problem with risking others' lives for their own gain.

And who said that we slow drivers were in the fast lane? No one. Before you throw out insults, or express criticisms, make sure they have some basis in fact.

And the "fast lane" isn't for driving at whatever speed you feel like, it's for driving at the upper reaches of the legal speed range. Slower traffic takes the middle lanes, and the most slow/cautious vehicles go in the far right. So don't just assume "fast" means as fast as you want.

You sure do seem to make a lot of ridiculous assumptions.

Speaking of assumptions.. your email makes a great deal of them.. down to the last anal retentive minutia...... Good Drivers dont put themselves in the situation you went to great lengths to describe.... they keep an adequate space cushion to make sure that such things DONT become a reality.... and in my case.. I dont FOLLOW people very often, I lead.

Perhaps you should be a fiction writer, as you have a talent for long drawn out fairy stories which dont resemble reality very much.

In your case.. I would say... "aim for the guard rail" and do us all a favor.

I cruise at around 63mph in my single port 1600cc stock-ish bus.
I worry about getting rear ended at night, mostly.
I sport Ollie's "Slow Moving Vehicle" reflector magnet to help in this regard.

after reading what concrete baloon said....MO is...

too much speculation, too many calculations, too much liberalism.

not that i want to get back into this pissing match. BUT. how about some experience. A: i posted a link for you to read...did you read it in its entirety?
B: i have been driving for 17 years. not that thats some amazing hallmark, but i drive more than most people ever will. in the year 1996 alone, i put 100,000 miles on an aircooled vw. ONE YEAR.
I have noticed something in all these years. my aircooleds have never failed me when it comes to braking. my bone stock brakes 58 singlecab, with bias plys, stopped on a dime. i cant count how many times newer cars stood on the brakes in front of me in commute traffic, and i was able to get stopped with plenty of distance between us.
Bottom line, i dont use the fact that i drive an old car, to justify driving slow. i would consider that a cover up for the fact that you possibly either cant build an engine, or cant keep the car up to spec so that it can work correctly when needed.
To be safe on todays roadways, your car needs to be able to accelerate, and decelerate at modern speeds. (within reason).
Why do you think they invented ABS? because people cant drive for shit, and need to be able to STAND on the pedal and the car do the work. IF you can drive, and apply brakes properly, youd be surprised how well a 4 wheel drum bus can stop.
Yes ive considered whats been said here. in some states, people actually drive 55-60 mph. thats fine, and i enjoy that also. do you think ill drive 70+ mph when i take my coast highway trip later this year...? nope. ill be cruising nice and slow. BUT when i need to move, say im on a swift freeway, my car is capable. And when i need to stop, boy youd better be ready to grab that dash handle, i cant tell you how many face prints were left on my singlecab, and panel windshields from passengers who werent on the same page as i was when i hit the binders.
Anyways. i could go on all day, im long winded and love debates. all im saying is, im tired of seeing busses and bugs beat to shit, because idiots own them, and cant make them work correctly. they are slow, and run poorly, and stop poorly. this makes the rest of us look bad. If your excuse is, you simply like to go 55 (your insane) thats fine. BUT, if your car doesnt run at minimum like it did stock, dont say, OH i drive 55 cause busses are notoriously slow. uhm. NO.
admit your shit is fubar and needs someone to tune it so it can attain freeway speeds.

hehe. end of mini rant. Very Happy

admit your shit is fubar and needs someone to tune it so it can attain freeway speeds.

Mightymouse said it all. My shit runs perfect, I build the motors and I drive them to the max and I have in 30 years never blown one up. As far as the speed laws in Arizona are concerned they are technically a guidline......its a legal fact. Other states have a speed in excees of posted limits law. No cop in Az is required to give you a citation for speeding.its his decision if you are being unsafe or "not reasonable and prudent". I have beat these tickets in court when the judge agreed my speed was not imprudent in the situation. I will also say that I have a perfect 30 year driving record with only a couple of speed violations, all on the interstate. I dont tailgate and I dont intentionally get in peoples way to slow them down..........thats just nuts..............just get right if theres no reason to be in the left lane.........thats what I do. If someone comes up behind me going faster I just get right and let them by, traffic allowing. If they tailgate me I just give em the old brake light but no brakes trick and they get the message to go on by. Im not trying to teach lessons to people, unlike you . Slower traffic keep right.......thats what the sign says.........one last thing if everyone is going the speed limit 75, and you are going 55.........who is the idiot? Who is causing a dangerous situation. Like I said speed differential is the number 1 cause of interstate and freeway accidents............your last post is inane and unintelligible. Sorry to hear about the mans motor Clara...that sucks............sorry to start ranting on this guy but he bothers me.

True true, im aware of that, but its also not my personal experience.
Ive ridden in all stock 36 hp busses, while a rare occasion, they were still able to go 60-65 after being held at full throttle for a while. same with 36 hp bugs. once you get them wound up, they sing. Smile
we drove from redding all the way to kelly park in an all stock 56 panel. we tried soo hard to get it to go 70, lol. wouldnt do it. hehe, stuck at about 60 mph, any wind at all...55.
so i feel ya. its just, that bus got some mods when we got back from the trip. lil cam, header, jetting,2 more degrees timing etc etc. after that, it still wasnt greased lightning, but it would go 65 steadily. 70 if all the ducks flew in a row.

sorry for the guy whos motor snapped, if youd like, Pm me. id love to help. take it easy. dave
