Hello I have a 1970 baywindow bus 1600cc motor with double carb, I was wondering if i can get some info on these buses.
1. What would be gas mileage on a 1600cc double carb
2.what is recomended to get more / better gas mileage on these buses with double carb.
3.what tools are good to keep in bus incase it breaks down?
4.Any other helpful info would be greatly appreciated.

I'm really NOT trying to be a smart a$$....
1. Depends on how and where you drive it, anything from 16 - 24 mpg. What are YOU getting?
2. Keep it tuned up. I wouldn't change much on your engine for the sake of mileage, except to keep the carbs well adjusted.
3. Depends on how well you maintain it, the better you do with getting it and keeping it roadworthy, the less you'll need to carry around, except on long trips.
4. a: Do try the search function for finding out a lot of detail about these things. You'll find a TON of good information is already here, because these questions have been asked a hundred or so times this month...
b: Get yourself a copy of the John Muir Idiot's Guide and read it, a lot, preferably while you sit in your driveway with your bus so you can touch, look at, and feel everything he mentions. Do or understand every maintenance procedure in the book, at least once. Then get a Bentley's 1968-1979 owner's manual and read that too.
c: Read and understand every single article on the top part of the forum index, and follow all the links it points you to, and read all of those too. The more you read and understand, the better you'll enjoy your new bus, the longer it will carry you, and the more you will love it.
d: If you can find a local VW club chapter, join it.
Congratulations. Enjoy. _________________ 1984 CABRIOLET 6spd, quaife diff, Neuspeed springs, sway bars, tie bar, short shift kit, bilstein shocks, 16X7 RSE 3pc wheels, BFG TA 205 40s

I second the notion of getting the John Muir idiot manual. He has good list of tools to buy, the ones you will need, the ones you will use occasionally, the ones you should borrow or rent. But there are no wiring diagrams,(get a Bentleys) or parts photos/interchange(get Tom Wilsons, rebuilding aircooled vws). you can get these used, in oregon its Powells , www.powells.com/ They will ship anywhere. Just parking/working being seen with a bus might get some other vw folks to stop and ponder, its happened to me. The milage will be how you drive, keep your engine tuned,brakes/wheel bearings adjusted. Are they stock(solex)carbs?...rc |

yep I'll certainly vouch for vw peeps popping up all over the place. I've had a guy in a new continental wearing a custom Italian suit offer to help me tune my engine of the side of the road, a guy in a Westphalia follow me for miles out of his way just to say hi and talk about the Wubster, and numerous other incidents. It is very common to find someone waiting to talk to me anywhere I park her. |
