I just realised that my 1974 baywindow has a Syro camping interior in it. There is almost no information around this German camping interiror to be found on the net. Please post pictures of your Syro vans...

I believe Nize meant that he believes that the Helsinki is a Westfalia interior, and that his is not a Westfalia interior.

Nonetheless, I do like the interior you have, Nize.

Thx... I need to restore it a bit though. I was at a show this weekend and talked to a danish guy who had the same interrior. He told me it was a Syro interrior but language confusion might mean that it was the brand of the pop top. I dont know at the moment. I know for a fact that Syro existed and still exists but I cant find that much around it.

I know there is a book that someone on Samba may have a copy of that may have some details in it on the Syro Kit. VW Camper - The Inside Story: A Guide to the Various Camping Conversions and Interior Layouts Used for VW Campers 1951-2005

I'm the danish guy with the green/white camper shown above. http://vwbussen.blogspot.com

The pop-top AND the interior are both Syro. I'm very content with the layout. The kitchen area is perfect with the top raised. The boards were with oak self-adhesive plastic laminate. I removed that using a hairdryer, as it was "boiling" in several areas due to the sun and heat through 30 years. New high quality plastic laminate is my next project, probably canadian maple.

Anaway the seating area would be nicer with two opposite benches. The small side bench is not suitable for tall danes, but you can't get it all...

To Syro history. I just got the book mentioned from Amazon. There is ONE page describing Syro. It was a german company named after SYbille and ROlf Koch founded early 70s, and discontinued in 1985. Kits for many campers in several layouts, some westy-like, all very functional. Syro published books to their kits. I found a link to one of the books here:
http://vwbus2.dyndns.org/bulli/michaelk/vw_bus_d/reparat0.htm

And for simplicity put a copy here:

I managed to get hold of a Syro pop-top today. That will be perfect for my 74 since I have the Syro interrior but the cheaper version without the pop-top. I am waiting for it to get home now so I can start cutting it in.

Morten, do you know which brand of refrigerator the Syro interior used?

I'm happy with my interior, but I'd love to have
that sink/fridge/stove. What years had those, or
are they just in the syro?

That is such an amazing setup - wish the early bay westys were more like that with the all in one gig.

Also curious on the fridge - size, and if it was a 2 way or 3 way? Sure would beat the icebox, can't tell if it's the same as the fridge option they had over here or not in 74...

Do you have any pictures of the interior of that pop top?

There are two books about VW campervan conversions, of which I am aware:

David Eccles, "VW Camper - The Inside Story: A Guide to VW Camping Conversions and Interiors 1951~2005", The Crowood Press, 2005, ISBN 1-86126-763-0 Hardback

Richard Copping, "Volkswagen Camper: Forty Years of Freedom: An A to Z of Popular Campervan Conversions", Veloce Publishing, 2007.

Veloce Publishing

Tel. +44 (0) 1305 268 864

http://www.veloce.co.uk

I believe the Syro campervan conversions are briefly featured in the former book title, which I borrowed sometime ago, on short-term loan, from my local public library. I have yet to see a copy of the latter book title.

After seeing the emblem on that pop-top I remembered seeing one here in Santa Cruz. It is considerably rusty. Not originally from California I would guess. I was told by the owner it is available, not for free of course. A thousand dollars seems too much for a non-running rust bucket. It does have a type 4 core.
