i got a nice surprise but it wasnt a gift from anyone. in November, i bought a 78 parts bus with a supposedly new engine that sat for a few years, or so the story goes...
didnt have good compression, and found "GEX" stamped behind the valve cover. after a rolling of the eyes i put the cover back on and figured the whole thing to be a paperweight.
so on Christmas day, i decided to break it down figuring that the cylinder walls were pitted to trash, but the compression fault was all in the GEX heads, and the P/Cs were NEW Kolbenschmidt 94mm! flawless!
the break in oil was so fresh that it protected the walls from rust, and i was able to use my special homemade tool to draw out the piston pins so that i would not lose the ring stagger by withdrawing the pistons from the cylinders. now they are all in the box, pistons still in their cylinders.
all my life i have had this urge to tinker in the garage as the holiday turkey cooks, and i have always wondered why i do this. is this a normal aspect of VW addiction? does anyone else here find that they just have to sneak off to the garage on holiday mornings? |

The funny thing is I really only asked for a couple of things and they where all for the bus. The bus got some nice new sheepskin seat covers, a couple of different tool bags, and some tools to keep in the bus. |

I figured this is a good place to practice a first post!
Winter Solstice List--this has been stuff added in the last month or so:
* Second Skin Damplifier Pro for the rear and floor (in progress)
* Reflectix insulation for the walls and doors
* all new door seals
* new curtains (made by my wife)
* electronic ignition to replace points (not yet installed)
* rear emblem
* sofabed (bought hinges, researching how to build the bed still)
Am still figuring out how to post pics! _________________ Current: '71 Bus (daily driver)

Here is a good schematic of how to build your bed. If you bought hinges for a full with bed, there will be no mods necessary. If you took them out of an old bus that had a partial width bed (closet next to it, you will have to do some cutting, but nothing to difficult. Either way, you are going to have to remove your engine to access the gas tank area. (unless you use some sort of self clasping bolts). Either way, you can PM me and I will give you some tips. I just did this about a month ago.

Still, I bought a replacement bed cushion and two front seats from Jake in Charlotte and my brother inlaw brought them down here yesterday. I couldn't be happier. |

Excellent. Thanks, panicalum. I am going to build one just like that--full length to go in my non-camper bay. I do have that diagram, but I'm also wondering about where exactly to bolt the hinges on the back rest--just want to avoid having to re-attach if it interferes with the seat when pulling it out, if that makes sense. Also, I read from other posts that everything can be done from up top....you have to access underneath? I'll pm you with questions. Thanks again! _________________ Current: '71 Bus (daily driver)
