I think they just attach with suction cups. At least that's what I would do if I made my own.

AHU is the engine code of TDI that I have in my van, there are 3 generations of TDI that typically end up in Vanagons, 1z (the oldest TDIs in North America, 96) AHU (97-99 IIRC) and ALH (99.5-2003), then it goes BEW, BRM (I think).

In really cold weather I end up with some frost on the inside of my back windows, which would prevent the suction cups from sticking to the windows, but they would be quick and easy in less than arctic conditions.
Magnets sewn into pockets around the edge of the insulated window cover would work pretty well I think, and not be affected by cold weather.

wcdennis from the website Window Insulation panels to keep the van warm while camping. These three panels cover the front windshield and the drivers and passenger door windows. They come with suction cups to attach to the glass and a nifty zipper topped duffle bag for storage. These will help keep you warm at night. Although they look like they were made by NASA, they are made in Germany.
but in the pic that is the middle window. Van cafe sells the 3. I will look in to it more. Rare Earth Magnets are awesome for all sorts of things,

They could even be epoxy'd/super glued right onto the fabric for better sticking power since there would not be a layer of fabric between the magnet and the steel of the van.

The PO did this nice custom kitchen of which I am very appreciative... All made with oak and stainless steel. The lower box holds the propex heater among other items. Cork flooring as well.

$85 for three window coverings? Find the local thrift store and buy up some old coats or any other kinda material and have fun with it.
I find the windows fog up an awful lot when sleeping so its nice not to have a gap between the material and the window. The magnets have always worked the best for me..so easy to attach.
Those custom interiors are very sweet but personally i find it too cramped with all that stuff inside the van...then again i don't cook in it. With the money we save not buying $85 window coverings we eat at nice restaurants. |

The wooden interior (first 4 pictures) was down by the owner, well, that guy did everything alone, included the nice paint job. A super sweet couple who never own a westy (2 years ago), they bought the van because it was a dream for them, the then decided to get married on the west coast but 3 week before the trip the head failed. They where so nice that i took them even if i was fully booked.... i fix the little 1.9L and they went West to Vancouver island, then came back with some gift.
What a nice story. Beautiful people!
Now i'm working on their next engine, a 2.5L Subi, they have put the money aside now for 1.5 years.
Super nice folks, i just love my job when i have to deal with people like that.
They didn't even know if they would love traveling in a westy, after that first trip... they where hooked! And they told me for life!
Anyways, i'm happy for them that you like the home made interior, i will tell them. It's very intelligently made. A lot of nice little feature. And the wood he choose is very light.
Nothing to do with the second one i have showed you, that second one is so heavy that the van as handling problem:

I made my own window insulation with some of those silver reflective things that you put on your windshield on a hot day and some suction cups that I bought from Walmart. I was thinking more about ways to keep my van cool during the day in the summer. They do help a great deal but the suction cups are a real pain. I have a really hard time keeping them all attached.
I'm eventually going to make a new set using a more flexible fabric and some sort of snap. I've found that if they aren't really easy to install and really easy to store then I won't use them much. The ones I have now are only brought out on the hottest of hot days when I can't find any shade to park my Vanagon in.
On another note those custom cabinets are spectacular!

Huh? 
Making your own window covers does not = compromising r factor. The r factor in a van is almost nill..that['s why the condensation hits the windows so fast.
You wanna' spend $85 on a $5 dollar item be my guest....and enjoy your bowl of poop. I have no idea what you meant by that but it was weirdly cute. |
