D'oh....got it. Ive seen several dealers at pomona that have the yellow plates broken down by year. Was it a different situation with the yellow plates or more myth? The more I search the more inconsistencies I notice.

I knew that I should have used "ABC-123" or somesuch! Smile

There _is_ some correlation of letter' series to year of issue, but not in '63 and possibly '64. Starting some time in '64 plates were issued in alphabetical order but skipping the already-issued blocks.

I remember that there was a guy who had researched this even to the point of figuring out which letter blocks were issued to what California counties in '63. He had the whole thing on a web site, but it was hosted by AOL Hometown and got hosed when AOL shut that service down.

For those looking for the correct sticker information here is the DMV reference:

Or, if you like pictures:

Its an original black plate car and would be a shame to get another set of plates instead of keeping the original number on the car.

I'm curious about this too. I have one of the originals from my car and am wondering if DMV would allow me to use it on the rear with a reproduction on the front. Does anyone have experience with that? Thanks!

I know a guy who had a repro black plate made to replace his missing front plate. It looked dead on. The only difference I could see was that the back of the plate was yellow instead of black. And apparently, the guy can't legally ship them into California for some reason.

The problem is that the law requires original plates and the repros are made of aluminum, not steel as the original black-base plates were. While a good reproduction might be slipped by visually, it's awfully hard to make aluminum hold a magnet.

Old license plates.
I see a 64 and a 65 sticker that won't be needed on a 63 truck.
Greg has used a hair dryer to warm up the year sticker to soften the glue and safely remove them. In Washington there is a YOM plate system, so to get to a 61 tag you may have to carefully remove 62 tags.
Also, I've found WA original vintage plates /year stickers/ metal year tags on ebay, bet there are CA ones one Ebay now.

I guess I am reverting back to the "Cal Look"..

Speaking of reverting back, here's my Squareback from a 1972 camping trip up to Oregon (before I went bald). Original black and yellow plates on a 1968.

FINALLY! 67 plates on the 67!

Had my appt at the Fullerton DMV today at 3:30. Took 1/2 hr to get to a window. Got a guy who was like 19 to help me. First thing he asked me was "have these plates been restored?". I told him no (they're not in perfect condition and even have some small rust on 'em! ). I had plates that start with U as that was the sequence for '67, and I was lucky enough to peel down to a mint 67 sticker as well (all told the plates cost me $50 from someone here on TheSamba). I gave him my reg, and he typed away for seriously 25 mins. He never did measure, magnet test, or xerox the plates. He took 1 of my previous personalized plates as I only brought 1 with me (the other was "destroyed" by a body shop Laughing i.e. hanging on my garage wall). He had trouble getting the fees right, originally was gonna charge me $12 for the deal, but ended up charging $35 at the end (after consulting with a supervisor or friend who was about 22.) Gave me the paper window tag, told me the DMV will send out new stickers, and it will probably take 3 months or more. Whole process took about an hour (even with appointment). Done deal.

On another note, there were some hot young ladies at the DMV today. Not sure if they were applying for their first drivers licenses Twisted Evil or not, but my oh my... Cool Cool
Cool Very cool Brian, can't wait to see 'em on!. So, you were charged $35 as well. Hmmm... guess it depends on who you deal with at the dumb v?. If you want to see the parade footage before the discs are done, I put it on youtube. VW Buses GDEcontrol. See you soon... Dave

J.C. Higgins, circa 1956, heaviest canvas tent on earth, purchased by my mom and dad when I was seven. Camped in it up to the 1990's with our kids, who complained of all the bad smells it gave off when the sun heated it up... Putting it on up the roof rack was an Olympic event.

One of those that you parents said not to touch on the inside when it rained. I remember you and wondered why anyone would drive around with that filthy connotation as their plate. I just heard a rumor that stickers is a misnomer.

That's what concerns me, no steel repros. Has anyone heard of any being made? Supposedly the "Mad Greek" at cr8apl8.com makes plates which CA DMV has approved for use on the front but I haven't seen any DMV documentation to that effect.

went to the mad greeks site, saw the "legal to use" claim but the word "display" is used. I think that means not for use on the road.

he shows "metal" replacement plates so I emailed to see what kind of metal...seems to be aluminum. On the site it explains steel plates would be counterfeit thus illegal.

I also asked for some pics of actual plates, they kept sending me CG versions. I kept asking for ACTUAL pics of plates on cars and was finally sent one TINY pic of a yellow/black CA plate and it did not look accurate. It seemed the california was of some regular font and did not look raised.

Has anyone used the greeks plates? Any real pics of them up close? Did you like them? He charges only 55.00 but I would rather pay 80.00 for a more accurate repro.

It seems the licenseplates.tv plates are of better quality and accuracy with many more satisfied customers.

here is a link to a mustang forum and a pic of the plate discussed

The second plate looks great, and unless someone has better pics of the greek plates I will be ordering one very soon from licenseplates.tv

I've read that the Mad Greek's plates are pretty chintzy but have never seen one. RayRay(@aol.com) showed me one of his at the Sacramento Autorama and it looked like a real license plate to me, so you may want to try him. His are also aluminum though. I would be fine with that if I already had the plate reassigned to the car but I need to "fool" the DMV into believing I have a legit pair. I would pay any amount for a steel plate. Then I suppose I'd go to prison for counterfeiting and be able to make my own anyway.

OK.....so for the ones that have actually been to the DMV and have paid their $$$, who has had to have the year sticker & who hasn't? Also, any exceptionally good or bad DMV offices as far as YOM plates go?

They let me go at the Gilroy DVM office....but it got kicked back from the Sacramento office and I had to buy the '60 tag for my bus before they'd give me current tags.

Do you blow heat on the tag or on the backside of the plate to heat up the entire plate? It's worth it to do this. The '60 tag is about $50. The '57 is a lot more than that.

Only 3 days so far nothing yet! Cool

I didn't receive a clarification on the sticker/no sticker, but since I found one already on there I decided to roll with it.

I looked at all options for this, and considered taking in aluminum plates until I found some DMV clerks were doing the magnet test on em (mine didnt). Now that I got the tags through, I might buy a licenseplates.tv alum version that look brand new.

As far as better DMV's...it seems that maybe some DMV people have had recent training for YOM due to the recent law changes. I think its a good time to do the process because theyre seeing more of them right now. Did not seem to be nearly the nightmare that some people on here have had in recent years.
