I hooked up a mechanical oil gauge I got, and it's reading ~43psi idle and 45psi or so when given gas (though, in neutral).
Sound about right? _________________ 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Daily Driver/Rolling Project Beater - Stock w/ GT Style Exhaust

43 idle... how thick and how cold is the oil?
What's it at operating temp? _________________ Glenn

43psi is 10w-30 and an ice cold motor in about 60F weather.
I drove about 50 miles and checked it (the gauge is temporarily mounted in the rear until I get long enough hose) and now it's at 20psi and when given juice it climbs to 40psi or so (before I backed off the gas, the neighbors are sleeping) _________________ 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Daily Driver/Rolling Project Beater - Stock w/ GT Style Exhaust

I wish I would have checked it without shutting it off. I drove 50 miles, went to take a leak, posted my thread, and then started my car back up and got the 20psi reading.
As long as it's not too bad, I'm happy.
Thanks again Glen _________________ 1974 Volkswagen Super Beetle - Daily Driver/Rolling Project Beater - Stock w/ GT Style Exhaust

regardless, 5-6 psi is fine at idle, you do not need more than 2-3psi without a load on the motor. |

A general rule of thumb is 10psi per 1000 rpm. With that in mind, with the engine warm and at 850 rpm (idle speed), the oil pressure should be about 8.5 psi. These are general guidelines.
The stock oil pressure sender goes off at 6/7psi. Therefore, depending on conditions, the oil light may flicker at idle. This is normal. There is no cause for worry if the oil pressure is 10psi per 1000 rpm at speed and under load.
Less oil pressure than 10psi/1000rpm may indicate internal bearing or case wear and should be addressed before your engine suddenly goes "boom". _________________ Don't take life too seriously- you'll never live thru it....

My idle oil pressure is also 10 psi or lower when hot, even Arizona hot (20-year-old 1835cc).
