I've owned lots of Type1's over the last 25 years, but this is my first Squareback.
Some might have seen this for sale in the southern part of Washington. I worked a deal and drove it home almost 300 miles!
2275 never missed a beat, tons of power.
Yup, 31 inch tires on this. Love it!
Lots of work to do, going to keep this thread updating with it's progress.
This is my first thread and real post, does samba have the ability to upload pictures? Do I need to host them and then post links?[/img] |

Very cool squareback! All the pictures I've seen here are of people lowering their VW, I was wondering if somebody had the guts to lift it!
They have a thread here on posting pictures, but basically you need to have the picture uploaded someplace on the internet (like the Samba Gallery), then wrap the link to the picture inside [img] and [/img] tags:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6
The result is like this (linking to your 914 thread image):

Very cool, thanks!
I've kinda gone through the brakes and have ordered up a few parts for it. I'll get some more pictures up this week. |

Congrats on your purchase. I didn't see that one before, but it looks awesome!
It is definitely dark side style, but should be great in the snow!
Good luck and what are plans? Full on baja or just clean up the loose ends? _________________ ~I should change my cars name to "Leaky". |

Just clean up the loose ends. A lot of planning and work went into creating this thing. It has a bus tranny and is actually pretty comfy to take on long trips. My son and I spent 5 hours and 280 miles in it, seemed just fine to us.
Most anything I'll do will be cosmetic. The seats are okay, the carpet is toast, panels are so-so and dash is pretty cracked up. So I don't mind spending $800-1000 to get the interior nice.
The exterior will eventually get painted as well. It was originally yellow, then green (still green on interior) and rattle canned white on just the exterior.
You can tell at one time, it was lifted like this with a nice paint job and interior.
It even has the rare tach! |

Dang, that's a small picture!
I uploaded a couple of pictures to thesamba.
I haven't done a whole lot to it yet. I fixed one small crack in the header, easy weld-up.
Waiting for throttle pedal repair kit and oil dip stick boot to arrive via mail.
Need to adjust steering box (Just get it the best I can)
Front calipers are kinda hosed. Rear drums and shoes are really good.
It's a 73, but has 2 inch spaced calipers on the front. Anyone know if I can simply find a set of late spindles and swap them out?
I have calipers from the front of a 914 (Same thing as later SB calipers) so if the bearings in the rotors are the same.
Thoughts? _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Trying the picture thing again...
I know some are going to cry foul on the stock carbs on a 2275....but wait!
They have been properly re-jetted. I do plan on getting the shorty manifolds and pulling the 40IDF's off my 914 and slapping them on the Squareback (re-jetting of course). The 914 will go back to FI. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Those are not stock carbs. Those are Weber's ITC's.
And I cannot see it, but are those fan housing outlets blocked off as they should be? _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Yes, they are blocked. The engine builder knew well enough to maximize cooling so they have expansion plugs in them. His plan was to install the electric fan kit (Kinda like boat bilge blowers).
Ah, so not stock carbs. Still new to the Type3 stuff. Fun learning!
With the driving that's been done, this is a proven set-up.
I should probably just leave it alone. It's nice to tap the gas once, have it fire up and idle. Chokes are nice.
It has TONS of power. I'm continually shocked I can pick a hill, any hill, 1500 rpm's in 3rd, about 1/2 throttle and it pulls! Not just mantain, but pull up the hill!
Even with 31" tires, if you really dig into the throttle, it pulls like crazy!
Never knocks or pings either.
I have all reciepts for the build, crank, cam, bearings. He even gave me all the old parts in a box he replaced. More proof of the build quality. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Thanks Mike, good deal for the parts and it should get my SB brakes back to 100%. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

I've got your spindles off the beam. Amazing how much faster you can work under a Deadline! I'll have them with us in Kent tonight @ my sister's house. I was wondering if you'd like to pick them up in Kent Sat-Sun and have a beer with us or next week @ her office in Renton? Mike

Dan(Root_Werks), Michelle & I in Kent, WA Sat. morning. You can see his "new" late model front bumper wrapped in a blanket and wedged between the seats of their 2.0 Liter 914. Dan & Michelle didn't stay for the Mom's recipe sweet & sour BBQ spare ribs/potato salad/corn on the cob/6 huge pitchers of Margaritas etc!

It was great to meet you, your wife and sister, she has a really nice place. Thanks again for bringing up the parts and bumper!
I actually got the spindles installed along with the 914 calipers. Ugh, a little more modification than I thought. In the end, I think those 31" tires need all the brake power they can get.
Everything is installed and working now.
I'll get some pictures up.
Lots of little things to do, but the major stuff will be interior and probably next year, body and paint.
Again, thanks Mike! _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Old man winter is right around the corner and it's getting time to think about putting the 914 away for the rainy season.
Soooo, can I drive the Monster Square?
Mmm, no, all the seals are pretty much shot or non-existant. Pulled a couple of windows thinking I'd just replace the seals for the winter prep. Quickly learned I wanted to shore up on any corrosion and paint the thing. Sigh, one small step for an idiot, one gaint leap for the profits of a paint shop.

The more I digged into the Monster, the happier I was. I just wasn't finding any corrosion worth mentioning. Very happy!

Little better shot of the interior and the carpet kit I made myself. The larger boxed in front wheel wells don't lend well to a stock kit. You are kinda stuck making your own.
MK2 seats, very comfy!
It was originally yellow, then dark green, then the green you can see on the dash, then white.
I'm thinking I don't really need to worry about paint code to body plate here. I'm thinking of a solid smoke grey or that Audi solid grey?
