It's harvest time in Mendocino County California right now. Hundreds of college kids are thumbing their way north up the 101 corridor with huge back packs, hopeful that they can land jobs trimming, harvesting and otherwise working the obscenely huge annual pot harvest, as has been going on year after year after year. Amidst this harvest however, shall occur another harvest.
Enter The Hanson Concrete Panel.
Purchased in the early 1970s by Mr. Hanson for use in his construction and blooming concrete pumping business, the January 1961 bulkhead 211 unit eventually fell into disuse after it's split-case transaxle began popping out of 4th gear. Parked on a hillside on his property and hoping to get time to devote to the repair, Mr. Hanson instead, logically, followed the then, heavily increasing concrete pumping business, and his bus was left to sit.
And sit, it, -she- has... for 35 years now... I was 8 years old.
Now, tomorrow morning... I will arrive. I will encamp, and begin site work, mowing back the weeds, lopping back the bushes, and slowly digging her out, conscious that I am at her resting place, her home. One with the land she has become, and I will not violate her place with reckless abandon. Instead, I will ask her permission, cajole her hardened shell to accept my hand, and sooth her in such a manner that she allows me to help her rise again, to preside and command over all that she has silently looked over for so, so many years. My tool box is heavy, my muscles strong. I am ready.
Details: Originally a "Grund" painted, non-walk-through, un-cut low-hinge, uncut excepting for skylight in roof. Leather covered dash Driver's door removed, controversial split case trans and 36 horse lay buried in weeds and bushes behind, spring plates cut by blow torch. Generations of wood rats have lived and died in cargo compartment. Post split Westy hanging closet and pull out bed hacked-in, once the rage, now fire wood, 356 wheel mounted to nose with bicycle rack protruding. Location is 150 miles north of San Francisco, in mountains, half a mile from pavement on private property, overlooking a breath-taking valley of Redwood forests. Front wheels and beam in place, rear wheels not found yet, bench seat frames in cargo compartment. Cargo doors Kombi or Standard units. Camera phone image shows date: 24 01 1, other numbers too hard to read other than paint "Grund" Couldn't find the code on this, but it's clearly Green of some kind. What is the code?
Mr. Hanson has granted permission to exhume and bring her back to life. I will commute, camp and love on her for the three weekends between now and A Hull Of A Campout...
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=250981
... at which time, I will awaken her, and, with Mr. Hanson, all of her tree, rock and animal friends watching -keeping her dignity thoroughly intact- drive her from the mountain, and then the 75 miles through Covelo and directly to this most fitting party.
Pictures and reports to come... |

I'm starting to get little wafts of bus stink coming from the north. Something about the unique scent of drivers seat padding when it's glued together with mouse piss and shit that really gets me going... and I'm smelling it! Oh yeah! Time to start loading up the equipment. |
