Even better is this expensive radio controlled version. These guys DO ship to the U.S. because I asked them.

I'll post photos when mine arrives. I have a buddy who loves doing tedious things like re-painting a 1/43rd scale VW model roof from black to white! _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

I thought it was weird that the model's roof is black to begin with. It definitely is not as common as the white roof on the real deal. I would think that the model maker would want the color scheme to appeal to the broadest buyer base by having it match their real life bus--but who am I to jump to such conclusions. It is obvious that some model mfgs make models because they are truly passionate about cars and so for that reason may not really care about broad appeal.
Anyway, I would love to be able to just buy one with a white top like my bus. _________________ "Aircooled VWs are like roaches in that if you let one in, they'll soon be nesting all around you in great numbers."

It turned up in the "black bus" thread that there was an actual bus model. or conversion at least, like that. It's called a "clipper"

Wow props for that. From what I recall VW only offered this option for a very short time... I've never seen one. Not sure I like the look as much as I thought I would.

They talk about it in the "rarest of the rare" thread Page 5
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=163207&start=80
I guess it was a production option, kind of beyond a deluxe, was originally to be called a 'clipper' but some trademark infringement with a plane of the same name. The 2nd number in the vin is a 4 on them all instead of 2 or 3 like a transporter or a camper. I guess it is the rarity and 'ultimate deluxe-ness' that prompted them to make the model of that one. It's very German-looking, the split black; more common on a split for sure

The Clipper-L was an option package that was not available in the US. The Clipper that you see in the photo was probably brought back to the US by someone. Furthermore, the Clipper-L package included: deluxe interior (even more so than a regular deluxe, added trim panels on the interior panels as well as different colored vinyl stripped seats.) also included were aluminum bumper guards front and back, jail bars and a rear seat luggage bar. The Clipper option was available on any color of bus, but you don't see real clippers very often. |

So then is that recent pile of shite you bought down here one of those uber rare deluxe-deluxe ones? _________________

The bus is pretty rare considering how many they probably made. It's my all-time favorite VW next to my buggy that I started to build in High School. I'm super happy to have it Jason! I'll be sure to take care of it, and believe you me.... you get ALL the credit for hooking it up on that one! You'll always have a place to crash whenever you're in Kansas City...... and some cold Coronas ready! |
