could always cut the vin # from the pan and weld it on the new frame and just say you rebuilt everything around the vin plate Laughing Laughing Laughing

Yes John, that was the creative part mentioned in my previous post.

The thing that keeps me going with the current donor is the fact that the rear is very solid.

it's just metal fab and if you enjoy that sort of work (I do!) it's not so bad. I would recomend having all of the chassis bit sand blasted NOW rather than waiting until it gets painted or powerdered. The extra expense is well offset by having a nice clean piece to work on and not having rust dust & bits constantly messing up your work space.

You are correct John, I enjoy metal fabrication. The only part I'm not sure on how to approach is the tunnel bottom plate in the front. I don't own a bead roller.

For sandblasting, I own a portable unit and plan on cleaning it up before applying rustproofing.

For the bottom, cut out your part, draw out the bead pattern and just have a local metal fab shop roll it. Will probably cost less than "engineering" another solution.

Or, make youself some sort of male and female dies. Attach them to a set of hinged arms (like really long scissors) then use your bench vise, shop press or big ass hammer to press in the beads.

I've got a simple way to do this if you need to go that route.

Got some progress today. I must admit it was slower than anticipated due to migrane issues.

Cut lines.

I think it turned out fine. Going to try to locate a friend with a bead roler to fab the bottom plate.

I should receive the floors and the head end next week. Unfortunatly, we're off to Florida for a short vacation next Saturday. Probably not going to be able to work on it until xmas next.

As rusty as the chassis looks to be, I would not do anymore welding on it before you have it sandblasted. Sandblasting will uncover more badspots that might be a game changer.

The body has been sandblasted by the PO a few years ago and was stored indoors. I must have poored at least 10lbs of sand from the body!

I agree with you a new sandblasting may uncover more repairs to be done but I asure you, the rest is not that bad. The rear is actually in very good shape.

I do plan on sandblasting the whole thing regardless. Probably after the holidays.

Of course, left side is in the box... The quality is very nice and I look forward to starting the rebuild.

Of course, the 1st order of business will be to media blast the frame.

Words usually not found in the same sentence:

Have some fun. Winter will be long, the car will wait.

If I had to deal with that much rust, I'd have migranes too! Looks like you will be able to save it. Looking good so far!

Thanks Tom but you're a few days late... I already ordered and received a new head end. I ordered it from Canada to support my country a little bit!

Worked on the frame a little this afternoon.

Got the floors lined up. Still need some grinding but close.

I like how they fit.

Is the 'Buy VW parts to support the Canadian economy' effort working better than the 'Buy Molson' effort? Laughing
