Anyone have any info on where I can get a set of seals for my 69 bay. The Canadian place has the output shaft seal but not the input shaft, and since the one he has is 10 bucks with 15 bucks shipping, I thought I'd look around.
The old ones don't look that bad, but while I have it out.....

look at the seal. get the numbers off it - they will be metric and go to your local bearing supply. I have seals for the late bays but haven't a clue what size the early bay boxes take. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

The numbers/info on the seals are (original vw):
Input shaft: BASL 24-36-7 with cFw A 4
Output shaft: D6 27.37.7/2
I imagine two of the numbers have to do with inner and outer diameter, then one number for depth?
Will research it..thanks for the tip. _________________ "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle |

yes
24mm x 36mm x 7mm
The late steering boxes use different sizes:
The upper is 22x32x7
The lower is 28x38x7. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Called one place, they only were wholesellers. Tried working through a normal auto supply place (O'reillys), who have always tried pretty hard for me, and they could only get one for me, so I told them to hold off for now.
Haven't had time to visit a place I know about 20 min away, but they are a Purvis Bearing shop and might be able to help.

Here's some numbers to work with:
68-72 Bay Window
211 415 273 Output Shaft Seal 27x37x7
Chicago Rawhide Seal # CR 10577
211 415 277 Input (Worm) Seal 24x36x7
Chicago Rawhide Seal # CR 9502
A good bearing supply house should be able to get these for you. _________________ Jim Thompson

An industrial hydraulic supply house should be able to get the seals you need. Frequently a hydraulic and bearing house are combined. No need to mention it's on a bus. Instead rely on part number cross references, your old seals, or measurements of the shaft and bore sizes. There are a million industrial listings. If you go by the automotive parts houses that greatly limits you. _________________ 71 Superbug

Also NAPA or good FLAPS will often cross reference a CR (Chicago Rawhide in the day) seal number. I needed axle seals for my Bobcat loader wasn't about to pay $50 each for them, looked em up on the CR website (great crosses by dimension and common part numbers) and paid $4 each from NAPA for some '70s Datsun rear hub seal that was equivalent. So give em a call with the CR numbers listed if you don't have a good local bearing place close, or if they balk (as they sometimes do) at selling cash to you. Most good bearing places will however. Many great online bearing supply houses as well who are happy to drop even small orders right in a priority pack to you.

The guys at my local purvis bearing are working on it. When I finally get them I will let everyone know the details on the seals and how they seem to fit. _________________ "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” ~ Aristotle |

How difficult is it to replace the output shaft seal on a late bay gearbox? Are there any good threads on this? |
assembled or disassembled? If it is assembled then you will need to have tried it on something else first. There are many ways to pull it including a screw but one can get into trouble. I find that even with a new seal they will leak a little from rust pitting and a grove but we are talking just a few drops a month vs a puddle. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I once used JB epoxy weld to fill the grove the front oil seal made in the harmonic balancer of a 1963 GMC pickup. I cleaned it really well and put it on and let it set for 24 hours. Then I put it in my drill press and filed it down almost to the surface then I started using finner and finner sand papper on it till it was very very smooth. I drove it like that for another year without a leak. I used to drive 45 miles to work one way thats 90 miles a day 5 days a week with no leaks from it. I don't see why it wouldn't work on a gear box that is worn or pitted from rust where the seals go.
GOTTA LOVE JB'S |

Thanks for this discussion. I was able to order the seal I needed for the output shaft of my steering box from NAPA.
This is the 27x37x7 seal. NAPA part number 563524. The NAPA guy had to call it in, but they found it.
I thought I would post it in this thread in case someone else was looking for the same thing and did not want to order it from the Canadians.
I am now waiting for the puller to pop that arm off the shaft..

These are the Chicago Rawhide numbers they crossreference to:
28x38x7 Stock Number: 10924
22x32x7 Stock Number: 8510
Autozone only had the 8510 seal( $6 ), but NAPA was able to order the 10924 seal ( $8 ). Forgot to ask NAPA about the 8510 since I already had it on order with autozone.
Napa also had quarts of GL-4 in stock for just under $10.
I may try and look up the dimensions for the o-ring seal that goes under the round circular plate. Not exactly a seal that wears, but after nearly 40 years seems like a waste not to due it while I have things apart. _________________ 1968 westy weekender
