Mine is a '65(IIRC) but it's certainly NOT a 16gal tank.(I don't think...). I am Not sure if the 16gal is taller all across, either way The filler neck may be shorter(it would still have to fit under a Bug hood, right?) My filler neck is a good ~6" tall... |
Here is a picture. It looks like it is the same height all the way across and the filler neck is just a stub. It does fit under a Bug hood, so it should under the Thing.

Can you post pics. I love solving VW mysteries. Keeps the old memory/observation fluids going. |
Here are pics. The rear of the tank sits properly down in the opening while the front is shimmed up. The side filler pieces are ripped on a taper.

Has the front end been wrecked on the right side? |

Do they have a fuel float for this tank to monitor the level with the added capacity? _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

The tank doesn't fit anywhere across the front and there is no history of front end damage beyond a fairly minor ding. It is plain and simple just too big for the hole. |

I would also like to install the oversize tank in my 73 Thing. Can any else elaborate on their experiences with this tank? I don't mind losing the stock spare location or the outside filler. I really hate the limited cruising range of my Thing though. It makes my Suzuki Samurai seem like a long range trekker. |

Well, I found a stock '67 Beetle tank in good condition, and I installed it in my Thing last night. I like it much, much better than the stock side fill. A simple tank design for a simple vehicle.
I was even able to put nearly 10 gallons in it last night. |

Make sure your hood latch and cable release are in good shape and operate effortlessly. A broken cable could be really bad news. . . |

Yes, I actually adjusted them on Sunday as well.
As far as the filler being under the hood, it's no different than any other pre 67 VW. Again, it is something else the separates them from any other modern car. |
