Here's my 1970 Clipper 7 seater, non sunroof. Note, I've brought the white paint down to the beltline and the bumpers are missing the cool rubber trim pieces (Which I see you have, hold onto those with your life, they're crazy expensive to replace)

That looks great! Very nice looking bus! Do you have photos if your interior and m-code plate?

The interior was mostly missing or aftermarket when I got the bus 15 years ago. So I've installed a westy interior from a 1970 because I love to go camping. For me, a westy interior and a clipper exterior is perfect.

According to the owners manual photos, the clipper had the aluminum strips on the 2 tone door and wall panels

I'll see about getting an M code pic

I am kind of new to the VW game and was hoping some of you veterans could help me with a few things....I have a 1969 Montana Red Sunroof but I don't think it is a deluxe (VIN 229019405). It has the steel/chrome ?? beltline trim, deluxe interior and obviously the sunroof. It is a walk-thru with the basket weave seating a two tone panels. I believe it is mostly OG paint and OG interoir but not sure how to verify this (Any ideas?). BTW M-Plate and VIN Plate is still with the Bus.

Also, what is the "Clipper-L" this post references mean?

I know I will have more questions but wanted to keep this posting short.

Thanks,[/img]

Hi Dubskii,

I've seen your bus online, did you decide not to sell it? It's not a Clipper but it's a nice looking early 69 sunroof. It's funny, I just sold my 8-passenger Montana Red sunroof built two days before the one you have. It seems as they built a rash of them around the 6th through the 8th of September 68 from others that I've found.

You have an American model. The Clipper-L version was the top of the line version not available in the States. The difference is the aluminum with rubber insert bumper trim, rear jail bars - luggage bar, vertical stripes on the seats, added plastic chrome trim on the interior panels, chrome lower bulkhead vent cover, and a non-USA export code, or lacking one completely. Both of the Clippers that I've owned were German exports. This bus has an export location of Wiesbaden, Germany. I believe they were most often brought back by servicemen or women as most of them were found in and around the San Antonio/Austin, Texas area which is near Randolph Air Force Base. Decoding your m-plate will tell also.

HAHAHA!! Laughing Spot on!!

Djoul, the rear carpet was missing when I got it. The more I research I think you're right about the wheel trim rings for European models. I think since this one was special ordered with the North-American Export Package maybe they didn't install trim rims? I'll have to do more research. Here are more detailed photos of the bus. Sorry for the blurry shots, the humidity was high that day and playing games with my cell phone.

I removed the dreaded spare tire carrier. Rolling Eyes Luckily it didn't do too much damage aside from the holes.

My first bus to still have the original, VW windshield.

Interesting to have black Deluxe interior? M-Code came up "Interior color (doorpanels and seats) 40 - *** Unknown ***" But it is most definitely Clipper Panels.

I have the rear bumper trim.

All the seats no not have original upholstery as they were recovered by the last owner. He gave me the bus with a 3/4 middle seat which I still have.

Overall the bus needs some love but I am very happy with it. Through my lifetime I have worked hard and worked diligently to obtain a few cool buses; this bus however is my favorite. It's like an early Deluxe and a baywindow had a love child.. Smile I like the end result of that mix!

Thanks for the quick reply and info. I did decide not to sell. It is my first bus and therefore found it would be a little tough to get rid of. I want to repair a few things (Speedo, sunroof, etc) also. Nothing major. I like the stock look!

Djoul,
At some point in 69 production they went to the lower profile top pad. This bus is a May 14ish.. so towards the later point of the 69 year production. The high top pad would have been in earlier 69's and all 68's.

Djoul, I will pull the gauge cluster and check the dates on them. You should post some photos of your beautiful bus onto the samba!! It's a great bus and people need to see it!

I know I badly need to post more photos. The 68 has been in storage for a year now! Unfortunately it will probably be Spring before I will have time to get it out to work on it. Sad

When you like sunroof buses you tend to hold onto what little sunroof parts you have. I pulled my old sunroof parts and bought some new ones off here. Hopefully I can take the best and get the sunroof operable again. It was stuck closed for the past 35 years according to the last two owners. Soon she'll be sliding smoothly "fingers crossed"!

Lucky you. The one extra feature I wish my Clipper had is the sunroof. I love the Montana Red on the early bay. What are your plans for paint/body work?
