Vermont has a guide they go by for taxing older cars, not sure what that is, but it can be a little steep, I registered a '61 15 window 9 ? years ago, tax was like $390 or so, BUT if you take it to any Vt. car seller/dealer, they can fill out a form as to the cars "real" value, I got 65% of my $$ money back..
Also to be clear, Vermont does not give you a Title, just registration & plates, if your state takes that & gives you a Title, I'd say thats worth a $300-$500 tax bite.....
Plus, we needs the dough, yo........ _________________ Tom

Please let us know in detail, what you did, how you did it, and everything in between! I'm seriously considering this route for my car! |

Vermont DMV returned my application papers, check etc. From what I can tell they want $510 in tax plus $70 registration fee. They included some papers for appraisal or something? A new check for $580 will be in the mail. Hope that will suffice. Will update here when I know. |

Yes. vT charges you tax on book value. It doesn't matter that you say you bought it for $500. I regestered my '58 double door panel lady year and they told me it booked for something like 14k. I got a dealer parasail and had to pay tax on 1500 instead. _________________ Jason Arms

This may be a dumb question but does the Bill of Sale have to be notarized before sending it off to VT? All I have is a signature. |

No. VT is going to tax you on NADA value as I see it. |

Right, but you have to send a copy of the Bill of Sale to VT, right? Mine wasn't notarized. Will they accept it without it being notarized? |

Yes, it does NOT have to notarized.
Send a copy, or do like I do, have the wife write one.... _________________ Tom

What if it was gifted? Or as I should say "gifted." Lots of people will do this to avoid tax to and then miraculously make a "donation" to the family's pocket foundation. |

I went thru this with a title company on some busses I sold, the title company said $495 for them to get the titles, it turned out they were doing the Vermont registration on them, I did three titles thinking $1500 wasn't too bad. They applied and got them but to get them cleared and sent from Vermont I had to pay the tax at what they valued them at. One of them being a 56 deluxe one a 60 panel and the other a 64 standard. By the time it was all done I had to pay $4,000 for all three titles. |

Gifted will only work when you already have said title. There is a reason a loophole exists in the VT registration and titling process. It's called $$$ and you gotta pay to play. |

What is the "Them" you are refering to ^^^^^ ?? What did the title co. get you ?? Vt. Registrations or Vt. Titles ??
When I registered my Singlecab, I had the owners hand written bill 'o sale, and it said "VW Pickup" of course the Lady @ the DMV could not find Pickup in there Book, she asked other co-workers, no clue, just charged a base price on the $1000 I paid, if they had figured it out that it was a Transporter, I would have gotten boned on the Tax..... _________________ Tom

I think it was titles. The day I received them I had to sign and send them to the buyer of those busses. But yes they taxed me on transporters. And the 56 was the worst. It alone was like $2000 |

Maybe it was a title from the title co. ?? Vermont does not issue titles to anything over 15 years old, period. Anyone doing "The Vermont thing" gets a registration & plates. _________________ Tom

I did get plates so maybe it was just registrations, like I said I signed a bill of sale and sent them the next day to the buyer. This was just over a year ago. The new buyer had no trouble getting titles in his name. All I know is it was outrageous. |

You can litterally give them a bill of sale written on a napkin with mustard stains on it. All they care about is $$ _________________ Jason Arms

Hey Vermont guys!
I will be heading to Vermont tomorrow or day after tomorrow with my '59 Kombi to get the registration and plates.
I would like to user the dealer appraisal because I can't spend $600 on tax if it goes for NAPA value. My bus is pretty rusty and beaten so I hope the dealer will declare less.
Also if I am present in person in Vermont's DMV, does the reg process takes less time than mailing?
Are you guys around to grab a beer? _________________ Hi! I am Peter from Czech Republic...

I met you @ Trailbash a few years back I think.... _________________ Tom

I just arrived to Bennington few hours ago.
So I guess I will try here.
Any recommended dealer for the appraisal? _________________ Hi! I am Peter from Czech Republic...
