Tell Kelly that my Ecotec has been in my van a bit now and has been doing great. I randomly met him at the Texas Classic in 2014, back when I was still trying to figure out how I'd do my swap and turns out he already had one in his van, which was totally unexpected.

Just an update on Camp Creek:

There is a low water crossing when entering the campsite. With the rains this weekend, LCRA has temporarily closed the park due to road damage.

http://www.lcra.org/parks/recreation-areas/Pages/camp-creek.aspx

I will call LCRA this week and determine if the road will reopen by Friday.

If not, we have a backup plan: Cedar Point, which is just slightly farther north of Camp Creek:

http://www.lcra.org/parks/recreation-areas/Pages/cedar-point.aspx

This is another free campsite, and I visited it last week--lots of open space and lots of places to camp, even spaces right on the shore of Lake Buchanan. Very easy access for most vehicles, and no low water crossings.

I'll keep this thread updated as we go through this week.

Update: November Central Texas meetup moved AGAIN to Marble Falls/Cedar Point

Flooding and road damage have closed Camp Creek, so Cedar Point is our new free LCRA campsite--and it's still near Marble Falls.

Saturday, 7 November
12PM noon: meet for lunch at Peete’s Country Kitchen in Marble Falls, TX. More food options for those who don’t want just BBQ.

http://peetescountrykitchen.com

2PM: drive north 40 minutes to Cedar Point LCRA campground.

http://www.lcra.org/parks/recreation-areas/Pages/cedar-point.aspx

I visited Cedar Point in mid-October and found it to be a great free campsite in the LCRA system, with a boat ramp and lots of frontage on Lake Buchanan. Easy access, no low water crossings, and no serious insect problem. Fire rings and a primitive toilet. The police come through about once a day.

I hope to see you all this weekend!

Vanagon friends,

We had a great meet up and campout this weekend. Remarkable weather!

On Saturday at sunset I flew a kite with an old iPhone attached to it. Call it a poor man's drone... but I caught some interesting pictures of the meet up.

Big group picture... we had two more vans show up later.

Another big group picture.

I'm standing here in the orange jacket, next to my brother, and I'm reeling in the kite. We made some excellent ham radio contacts all over the world with a very austere long wire antenna.

Here's a 20 second movie of the combined kite photos... those prone to motion sickness should think twice about watching!

Let's do it again soon!

Welcome!

I hope you joined the Texas Vanagons email list (see http://texasvanagons.com).

I'm going to try to organize a meetup for Saturday, 23 January, for the Austin/Central Texas folks (which really includes anyone, but us A/TX folks seem to be the most prolific campers and drivers). We'll probably meet at noon on that day at Top Notch Hamburgers on Burnet Road in Austin.

Stay tuned.

Just got back from Mustang Island State Park, where some of the best camping on the Texas coast can be had:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Our second night on the beach was nixed due to high tides from the approaching front and from hurricanes in the pacific (and perhaps the full moon as well). When the surf started to wash under the van to the height of our axles I decided we should retreat to the parking lot.

We had to deflate our tires to 10psi to get out of the sand.

Here I am later in the day, lofting a kite in the parking lot. I attached a ham radio antenna to this kite in the afternoon and enjoyed excellent contacts for a few hours. The wind was strong enough to leave the kite flying overnight... until the front came through at 5AM and it promptly crashed. It was easy to recover from the dunes.

The parking lot also became flooded to a depth of two inches with surf water, but we made it out just fine. Another Westy showed up and we enjoyed a foggy night in the lot before returning to Austin through the rain and cold of Saturday.

I hope we can have a group campout on this beach sometime in 2016.

Hi Kourt,

Looks like it was a great time despite the high tides.

We went to a friend's land near Lampasas for Thanksgiving in our Westy. When leaving, got stuck in the mud but fortunately there were enough folks to push us out. Then further down the road couldn't see a low water crossing all that well in the dark and my left rear wheel went off the pavement. Bus was stuck until a friend in his 4x4 pulled us out. No harm done to the bus and thank goodness the water was only a few inches high at the crossing.

A group campout on Mustang Island sounds really good!

Howdy,

I'm still planning for an Austin lunch meetup on Saturday, 23 January, 12PM noon at Top Notch Hamburgers, 7525 Burnet Rd, Austin, TX.

This is a good chance to learn new faces locally and to plan some trips for the year. I could also be talked into camping at LCRA's Cedar Point park on Saturday night. The park allows free camping and is first come, first served--no reservations.

I'll ping the mailing list with this information as well.

Texas Vanagon friends--we had a great turnout at Top Notch today--15 Vanagons showed up! Great weather, and great gathering!

See you again in 2016!

I'd like to know if anyone would be interested in a group campout in one of three locations on the weekend of Saturday, 20 February:

Option 1: Limestone Lake Park, Marquez, TX: this is a true "middle ground" park in Texas, in that it is about 120 to 140 miles from Austin, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Houston. It sits in the middle of the big triangle formed by those cities. The park is free and requires no reservations. My thought with this park was to try to find a central location that equalizes the distance for everyone in the major cities.

Option 2: Mustang Island State Park, Port Aransas, TX: some of the best on-beach camping in Texas and the Gulf Coast. Campsites are numerous and there is no need to reserve in advance. It's probably four hours from Austin or Houston, and longer from Dallas... but this is fabulous camping! Many folks have expressed interest in this group campout.

Option 3: Cedar Point park, Lake Buchanan, TX: this is another free LCRA park and we had such success at this place last year I thought I would offer it up again. I'll never forget the moment our caravan of four Vanagons rolled up on Abel's Vanagon and his admirers--it was like we were acting out a Budweiser commercial and Spuds Mackenzie was going to appear any minute. Hilarious!

I'd love to hear feedback from Texas folks on their preference for the 20 February group campout. Reply to this thread, send me a PM, or go to the Texas Vanagons email list and reply there. Let me hear from you! Let's get our next meetup/campout scheduled!

WE GOTTA USE THESE VANS!

Okay, we are going to shoot for Mustang Island State Park on the weekend of February 20.

When: Saturday night, 20 February 2016

Where: Mustang Island State Park, Port Aransas, TX

What: Beach meetup and campout

Notes: they don't really take reservations for beach campsites because the sites are so numerous. Bring food and perhaps firewood--beach fires are permitted. There will be a nearly full moon that weekend, so tides may be high.

Some folks may arrive on Friday and stay two nights.

I hope to see many Vanagons there! This is what the Mustang Island Beach looks like:

I've been told by Patrick Johnston who is also a member of the Global Aircooled Society (G.A.S.) chapter in Corpus Christi that they are going to sponsor a bonfire for our group campout that Saturday night on Mustang Island (Feb 20th). They're gonna bring in a bunch of wood in order to treat us to a nice beach side bon fire. Can't wait! Thanks G.A.S.!
