|
|
Hey,
We have just installed the engine and automatic transmission as one unit on my 1978 baywindow.
We are just a little confused about the transmission and I have a couple of questions:
1) What exactly takes the weight of the transmission? We have put the two main bolts in that take a lot of the weight and we have put in the big bar underneath the engine - is there anything else?
2) In the photo you can see that there is a rectangular hole in the back of the automatic transmission - what is the purpose of that?
3) The photo also shows 3 screw holes on a "beam" on the bottom of the bus - obviously something is meant to go there but I have no idea what!? Does it have anything to do with the rectangular hole?!
Thanks

You're missing the rest of the front mount. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

Yes the front mount is missing. Did you remember to put in the sleeves (parts 18 and 19) that sometimes get left out?
You might consider blocking up the weight of that transmission from the ground up until you source your mount. No need to have all that weight just floating there putting needles strain on the balance of your works. |

Yes the transmission is currently supported and blocked up - my main question is, is this something that can be put in without having to undo all the hard work of getting the engine/trans up? I would hate to have to undo anything we did as it was so tricky! |

The mounts should look something like this, only without the hose (that's custom/unique to my bus).
You probably need to get the mount from a used parts place.
In my experience there is little to no weight on this mount when the bus is sitting still. I wouldn't worry about supporting the weight. But don't drive around without it. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

think of the motor as a separate box down there pushing the bus down the road, and up steep hills and driveways.
the bus hangs from the bellhousing mounts,
rests upon the mustache bar mounts
and pushes against the front trans mount.
without the front trans mount it wouldn't take long to break the other mounts and have a loose swinging engine.. (yes I've seen that in person). _________________

Thanks so much people - very helpful information. I went and searched through my box of parts and found these two parts that are shown in the photo.
The big part looks like the right mount - just wondering what the smaller piece is for? The holes on the small piece of metal don't quite match up with the holes on the mount. Any clarification would be appreciated.
Thanks for all your help people! |

That's it. All you need now is the two bolts and the washers.
Take a close look at the photo I've posted and the fiche Tcash posted. Those are parts 10 and 3. The fiche is a little confusing because it has parts from both a bus and a vanagon mount. But those are the parts you need. I believe the order of assembly on the fiche is wrong. The U shaped piece fits into the grooves on your crossmember. Then the flat plate bolts on under it. The orientation of the plate should be fairly obvious. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Big Valve heads, CS Cam. |

It goes to a transmission cooler. That is actually a watercooled Vanagon transmission which is identical to a bus transmission except it has the fittings for an external transmission cooler. In a Vanagon it uses a coolant to ATF heat exchanger. I'm using an air cooler with an inline thermostat and an ATF filter.
The only real modification necessary was to clearance part of the mount with an angle grinder. Look closely around the hose and you'll see where I ground. Also there is a return line which you can't see in the photo. It runs over the top of the crossbeam, through a 90 degree AN fitting to a banjo bolt. _________________ 1977 Westy, Automatic. Make sure that the holes in #10 are shifted to the right as in the picture.
You may need to spin #3 180* so the holes line up?

Thanks tcash. Might just blast it full of hot glue gun glue and restore it. |

Hey,
Does anyone know where to find a replacement for that part-it seems impossible- or any good tips on how to restore it (my mechanic just won't try anything except a replacement) I haven't seen the part just know it is a little loose.
