Done for now.
All back together plus fresh oil & filter. Oh and a valve adjustment too.
No test run yet because it's been raining all day.

You need the old school speckled paint on the sheet metal that would look sick. Every time I get in my bug it reminds me of the trans am AMC Javelins, Camaro's and Boss 302 race cars.
I did the Krylon Coarse Texture Spray Paint in black Granite came out nice. It was 6$ a can three years ago now its 12$ The dust cleans up easily with a damp terry cloth EZ to maintain. It took a month the strip all the old tar and contact cement that part was no fun.
This stuff looks nice good price too. Doubt it ships to California

Yeah the sheet metal does look like hell on my car.
I have given some thought on what todo about it but knowing myself all to well I would have have it all stripped down again to make it look presentable. LOL |

Patching up some holes, made a new combo coil / filter mount, and waiting for paint to dry.
Some scap aluminum sheet for the heater hole delete.
And straightening up the wiring.
Got the trany mount done and back in last night.

Looks good, but just keep in mind that the down strut for the motor mount will be larger at either end than the hole you currently have. Personally, I would make up a two-piece split plate that is screwed to the floor around the strut tube. This way you can have a larger enough hole in the floor to work through easily AND then seal it up with a rubber gasket cut on one side only to sandwich under the split plate to the floor around the tube tightly.
Good luck! You've done lots of work so far.

Thanks Dan
I did need to enlarge the holes to get them out so I could finish weld and paint.

I was trying to avoid running the bars inside the car because I didn't wanna make anymore holes where dirt and dust can get it but oh well here we go. LOL
This should work out just fine.
I guess yesterday wasn't a total loss, lower Mounts are good and solid, top bungs already done and lucky me the tubes just needed to be a little shorter to fit from the inside. |

After a few trips to Gorman I felt that the frame horns needed a little better support so I started in on these down bars from the cage mounts.
OK kids full disclosure, I waisted an entire day doing this only to find out that the drivers side bar was making contact with the #3 exhaust.
UGH !!!!!
In the true spirit of the home garage builders stuff happens.
I had a sneaky feeling that there might be a problem so it was only tacked in place.
The next morning I put my dummy motor in to check and sure enough!!!

Taking care of some loose ends.
Finished up the weld on these brackets and a shot of satin black.
Then a coat of smoke grey for the diagonal braces.
I know not very exciting stuff LOL |

Well I finally took her out for a day trip.
Hungry Valley OHV park in Gorman. Not the greatest place to off road but it's only about 60 miles up the 5
120 mile round trip and whatever we did in the dirt.
She ran flawless all day!!!
Funny thing is the blue manx is my old green buggy I built a long time ago. Still running the floor sweeper 1776cc I put together just to sell it. LOL |

Gosh those belts look familiar. Same identical ones as I've had in my Baja Bug since 2009. Replaced once due to age.
In a street driven Bug, they're a PITA. But my wife put up with them for several years of daily driver use.
Now I need to replace the seats that have been in there since 1983. They're getting pretty rough. |
Yes they are a PITA on a street car. LOL |
