I'm sure I'll have a few more questions later so I'll plan to keep everything in this thread so I can keep the info together...
Why is my fan belt fraying??? It only does it on the Front side (front is front)...I turned it around this morning and drove for a couple miles to find it fraying the previously non frayed side...It seems to be lined up correctly but?? maybe not...
I checked for tightness (1/2" deflection) and it doesnt appear to be slipping..

Check your pulleys for burrs. Could be your culprit as it seems to be increasingly common. _________________ Daily Driven Dubz. Phoenix Family

Run your fingers through the pulleys and feel for rough spots or sharp pointy spots. Those are burrs. They can happen during the manufacture, or from debris hitting the pulleys during use. File them down and your belts will be happier for it.
Hopefully this goes without saying, but DON'T DO THIS WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING!

If you don't find any burr's, try loosening the belt up about 1 maybe 2 shims. And put a new belt on. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

To be clear, you need to add a shim between the pulley halves to "loosen it up". |

I'll keep an eye on the fraying belt...so good for now...
How do you analyze the pipe test?
My Spark plugs are equally "smooty" (sorry about the pic quality)

First, do you have the thermostat and shutters in the fan housing??
Get the engine up to temperature as quick as possible.
How is your choke set? Back it off a little maybe. Is the choke pull off diaphragm working properly?
And what are you driving habits? Short trip, or long highway runs??
Short trip will look like that. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I'll check that -

This is good as far as i can tell...
And what are you driving habits? Short trip, or long highway runs??

Short trips for sure...2-3 mile jaunts not over 40 mph in town...
I was thinking running rich but I wasnt sure...
It runs/idles wonderfully with that nice tweet sound...
Maybe runs a little warm but Im in the process of getting the "correct" heat risers, tins, aircleaner, etc...
I'll probably hit Glenn up for an 019 while i'm at it...
These plugs only have maybe 100 miles on them so I wanted to get your opinion...Thanks _________________ 1967 Lotus White Beetle |

Take that sucker out on the highway, and blow the cobs out of it. 2-4 miles is not enough to warm one up completely.
Get the oil and the heads up to full operating temps. Then look at the plugs.
Make sure the choke comes off within 1-2 minutes. Make sure the choke pull off is working and doesnt have a hole in it. You can do that without pulling the carb. Just take the 3 screws out and look at it. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

I do that with all my non-daily drivers. I pick a nice evening when there's not a lot of traffic and go for a long drive on roads where I can maintain 45 + mph. I also take them on the highway and run between exits. Short trips where the engine doesnt get up to full operating temp are horrible for an engine. In my 450 SL (which hates sitting for any length of time or just getting groceries), I'll take it up on the highway and nail it on the onramp. It'll buck and sputter and fart out lots of black smoke. After several of miles of driving like a wild banshee.... I mean obeying all posted speed limits and varying my driving habits to fit weather and traffic conditions, it runs like new! Take it up the onramp again and no brownish black smoke and runnin' like a scalded dog
Those plugs look like what I took out of my white '67 when I just petered around in it. I took it up on the highway and ran back and forth for a while. Got home, looked at them again, and there was no soot.
Here's another trick my Mercedes mechanic taught me. If a car sits for long periods, or only goes on "granny-grocery-getter" trips (and is in a high humidiy area), run a dollar bill back and forth between the points. It may seem odd, but it buffs off any corrosion and I can tell a big difference in the performance of the SL. I do this prior to taking it out on the highway and it's very helpful. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

BTW, ocdbeetle, I love this picture! It reminds me of my cars under all their blankets .
Interesting, though.... cars dont suffer from "red-eye" in flashed photos. They have "white-eye", instead
(I have one of those carports, too )

Here is what heads can look like if you don't run them once in a while.
Those are the "cobs" that need burned out.

Lemme guess.... low mileage and owned by a little old lady!
One of my mechanics when I was younger worked on Bentleys, Rolls Royces and exotics. His #1 complaint from customers was that the car "just seemed sluggish" and needed a tune-up. Honestly, all he'd do is drive the car on the highway over to Tampa and back (blowing out the "carbon") and the cars would run beautifully afterward. He'd tell them that's all he did and that's all they needed to do, but they were too set in their ways. Back it out on Sunday, wash it, drive it back into the garage and wax it, and bring it to Woody twice a year for a "tune up".
Stupid rich people
