What year and model VW featured a rolltop roof as shown in the picture?

Thanks

That used to be Bruce Braun's old 46.

There was this company in the Netherlands named "Coenen" that made sort of a roll top:

There was also a VW38 at the corner stone laying ceremony with a rollback sunroof, I guess that is where the idea for the later sunroof cars like this came from

Original post picture is Ray Schubert's '49 Tucher rollback, formerly owned by Ed Economy. Not sure about the Bruce Braun reference. I'll ask Ray.

The roll top was a popular coach build add on in Europe before the war. It took some real experience to do correctly. I know that D'Iteren in Brussels used to do it. I was into Citroens in the 70's in Brussels and they still had one man at least that had done them before the war. I almost had a traction Citroen done, but the cost was too high at the time. They called it a "Decouvrable" They were high end jobs and DeIteren did them for all makes,

So VW having one as a stock model right off the bat was really trying to set themselves up as cutting edge competative.\

The post war 2 CV Citroen also was built as a rollback with a vengence, it opened from the windshield to the spare tire area if you slid the rear lid off. Nothing like seeing one of those with an armoir sticking up and out the back.

Ref Bruce Braun: he did restore one, a 46 and the olive drab one in the pix I believe to be the one he did. He also had extensive pix of the project. Again I am still not able to access my external hard drive. but I do have his pix

That is too cool! I would love to have one of those cars.

The wooden wheels must have been one hell of a bumpy ride. What were they used for?

Great pictures, keep them coming.

I was told the wooden wheels where used in the factory during, and just after the war when rubber was scarce. Used mostly just to move vehicles around.

Hello,

I have a question regarding these Tuscher conversions ...
did it have body reinforcements such as those found on the later VW Convertibles ? Or it was just a standard sedan body, with no extra bracing?

Also, ... i see around here a lot of pictures of the Tuscher, but all of them are with the canvas top down. Does anybody have a picture with the top on?

The '49 Tucher wasn't owned by Bruce Braun. Bruce's former '46 is in the hands of Jesse James
