Any recommendations as far as inspection and assembly preparation for the new OEM VW Brazilian cases currently available? Are there any reasons to avoid them? |

Check and make sure that the crank bore is centered with the cylinder deck surfaces- it was off center .013" on one of my blocks. I'll have to have the block decked to get even a compression ratio side to side.
Also check that the cam bearing thrust flanges are supported by the block. In another block of mine the cam bearings were free to move fore/aft .020" since the block didn't support the flanges tightly. This one seems to be a rare problem, I've only seen one other example posted here. Still wouldn't hurt to check though.
Make sure that the oil holes in the bearings and oil pump line up with the oil passages in the block.
I'm sure others will chime in and post more things to check. _________________ Strive for perfection in everything. Take the best that exist and make it better. If it doesn't exist, create it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough."

Check that the fuel pump flange will seat properly on the case. I have a new VW Brazil case
where the hole in the shelf where the end of the flange goes was machined crooked, and the
flange can not sit flat on the case. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I have had to align bore most of the recent ones back to standard. Yes, it cuts all the way around the entire bore. Machine the pressure relief sealing surface flat. Make sure the inserts don't stick too far out of the case, they can hang up on shims or the cylinder sometimes. Take the oil pick up out and clean it. They install it with cosmoline on it which likes to keep metal shavings attached. |

X2 on checking the main saddles.
They can be small or not round.
Also have seen the cam bearing tunnel too small and not round. _________________ Bus Motor Build

But isn't it amazing, we are driving these cars, 60 years after they were invented!
