Some more progress today:
Done with the welding in the battery tray area:
Not perfect but will do a bit more beating on it and put a little bondo on it and it will be a lot better than it was!
Not too pretty but who cares?
Tomorrow I will put seam sealer on all the seams and put some undercoating on the corner and battery tray area
Did some work on the engine also. I added a heat shield for the oil filter

I put the seam sealer on the battery tray area today. It says it should be used between 70-80 degrees so it's taking forever to dry since it's November. I scrubbed out the engine compartment and blew it out with air, looks much better now. I also welded up a screw hole I discovered in my bay tank, replaced the sending unit gasket which was cracked, and cleaned up the pickup tube and strainer.
I checked my crankshaft end play. It is at .005 which is the limit of the spec (.0027-.005). Is it a good idea to adjust it to bring it down to the middle of the spec, or should I just run it as is because it is within spec? I'm leaning toward leaving it as is because it is a lot of work to adjust the end play. |

| I guess I'll just leave it at .005 then if no one has any comment? |

With clean oil and keeping your foot off the clutch at red lights that will last forever. Grab the pully and shake it in and out every 1/2 year and see if it's gotten worse. |

Thanks. I always throw it in Neutral at stop lights anyway to save wear on the throwout bearing. Got the engine most of the way back together today. Checked the head torque, some of them moved a little but not too bad. When adjusting the valves I noticed 3 of the nuts on the left side loosened up very easily, although the adjustment wasn't off much. Each one of them broke off when I tried to tighten them up after adjusting (by the 3rd one I didn't bother adjusting first. All 3 off them snapped off very easily about when they started to feel snug - not tight. I replaced them with 3 I pulled from my old motor. I replaced all the valve adjusting screws when I built the motor. Anyone had this happen with almost new screws? Sub standard Chinese parts? I'm thinking I should probably replace them all at the next valve adjustment.
Got the bay tank installed today. Should have the bus driving again tomorrow. |

A lot of times people set the endplay a little loose to prevent any possible binding during break in...I've been told in the winter if you build a motor set it loose... _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Makes sense. The motor is broken in though I have probably 6,000 miles on it by now. I pulled it to check the head torque. Good to know for future reference though. |

Got the bus driving today, took a little longer than expected because I pinched the throttle cable in the bell housing. Of course when I straitened it back out it broke off. Luckily I had a spare but I had to yank the motor half way out, it was a fiasco. On the plus side, I can now get wide open throttle from the gas pedal which was not possible with the old cable.
Pictures from the last 3 days:
Seam sealed and painted:
Coated with 3M undercoat (I put a second coat on this morning, it was a bit thin)
Bay tank installed
I modified a later preheat tube to fit the smaller early preheater on the air cleaner. Need to get some hose to hook it up now.
Motor back in
And the bus went back to work today
Next thing on the list is to replace the RR wheel bearing. I have a couple of seal kits and a few spare RGBs so I will checking them to see if I can rob a good wheel bearing from one. I haven't ever replaced one on a bus, I'm hoping it's not much harder than a rear wheel bearing on a swing axle bug. |

My condolences for your loss, I just heard about it... even from 20,000 miles away.
The good news may be that your walk-through is actually waiting for you to pick up right now. I pulled it out with Christopher Moore last year and I'm sure Robert would happily help you unload what's left of your cadaver and turn right around with you and drive up to Willits to pick it up. It's a Standard that will require the surviving parts off of the cadaver, along with quite a bit of the sheet metal. It looks good, it's pretty damn straight, and it's got your name all over it. Price is likely VERY reasonable too.
Robert will contact Mr. Moore. If you don't have money now, I have good credit with Mr. Moore, and you have good credit with me. Plan on leaving immediately.
Oh, wait... you had full coverage insurance on it...
This means you have -other- options. I guess it boils down to whether you want to pay off bills with the bread and slowly put this one back on the road, or just find another driver and use the insurance bread as intended.
Lucky and SMART guy you... having full coverage. Will be curious how that turns out. |
