Thanks a million for all the responses. I thought I had posted a 'Thank You' yesterday, but I don't see it anywhere. Oh well, two won't hurt.
I am now complete with all my M-Codes. I have the book in transit, so maybe I can help others with their code definitions. _________________ Uncle Dannie

Ok my interest was spiked so I went out in the snowstorm and wrote down ol’ Maggie’s M-Code and got about maybe 80% of it deciphered.
Here it is:
52 089 363
J2R152 D02 148 227 508
07 5 7256 UP 2218 61
Ok I figured out this:
1st line:
5= 1975
2= Under 1 Million mark
089 363 = serial number
2nd line:
J2 = Lower paint color...couldn’t find official title but heard its called "Miami Blue"
R1 = Upper paint.... assuming that’s white but again couldn't find official title
52 = Interior color...."Leatherette" (Pleather knew that!! ) and "Grey" color...Ok....
3rd line:
D02 was uncategorized so I couldn't figure out the whole 3rd line!! HELP PLEASE!!!!!
4th Line
07 = 7th week of 1975...Sometime in February...knew that...
5 = 5th day.... didn’t know that!
7256 = Production planning number
UP = USA port.... but it’s a mystery which one...anybody know?? Boston maybe??
2 = Van
2 = 7/8/9 seater
1 = sliding door right / LHD
8 = 7 seater / Manual
Well that all correct.... now the startling news for me!!
6 = 2000cc fuel injected motor I thought it was unoriginal!!!!
1 = Manuel 4 speed
WOW!! I learned allot! Could somebody help me on that 3rd line! I'm sure I made mistakes somewhere along the line!! _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

I just picked up a '68 baywindow camper this week and I just have a question about the paint code. It is 523907. The type2.com list says :
523907 L87 perlweiß pearl white code for Westfalia campmobiles (type 23)
Does that mean it is Pearl white top and bottom? It is Pearl white on the top, but the bottom is a Maroon. I am pretty sure the bottom is repainted though.
Thanks in advance. |

You are correct. Special paint job codes '68-71 list your code as Pearl White, L87, Westfalia. Means the whole vehicle was originally white. _________________ Darryl

Oh. I guess that explains it. I've been looking everywhere on my Busses and also on the Web for info, and can't find anything about m codes for my 74 or 69 or 67 aussie busses. Since the two early ones are double doors, I was pretty keen to see this info. But as it turns out I got none! Just curious Rob, where did you find this out?
Cheers, A. |

You don't give the year of your bus, but the book doesn't list group code H03 for any year. _________________ Darryl

Dear Dwill,
starting from your feedback I want to advise everyone it is very easy to make a mistake (even I did it in the past with a bus of a friend of mine!!) with a few lot of the latest m.y. 1969 (more or less from 2x9 150 000), they started to decode prod. date like the 70-ies.
Infact it's not possible that a so high number (near by 200 000) has been produced 22nd of febbruary: but the 22nd week of year 1969, 2nd day --> 27th may 1969 closer to end of m.y. 1969 taken in july!!!
It is very easy to made a mistake because Feb. and May are quite closer: so for '69 owners pay attention about this VIN number limit
(2x9) 150 000 !!!!

The funniest thing is that serials around 150thousand buses of m.y. 1969 have been produced after half of March 1969 (more or less) and so let's assume someone have this number stamped on his m.y. '69 m-plate:
15 3 (prod date)
XXXX XX
XXXX XXX 9150123 (last part of VIN --> m.y. + serial number)
Okei 9 150123 means model year 1969 + s/n
But 15 3 !??!?!?!?!?!?!?!
As I told I don't know exaclty from which chassis number VW changed codification:
15 3 can be ....
15th week day 3rd --> 9th April 1969
OR
15 March 1969 ??!?!?!?!!?
199 thousand is quite far away and it's easier to understand it has the new codification, as well as numbers at least 20thousand lower than 150 000.
But what about the very last of the old codification and the very first of the new one??!?!?!??!
In particular, the case is restricted to the only day value that contains '3' on the third position: because for the old codification the third value will be always '3' (for that lot temporal production) and with the new, if you have a 150thusand s/n but a different digit in third pos, for sure we are in the presence of the 70-ies new codification!!!
Well ..another time...m.y. 1969 users pay attention!!!
Sorry for my bad english... hope you've undestood what I'm trying to explain!
ciao need!
P.S. : Check this information also here: http://www.type2.com/m-codes/t2date.html it's V. Molenari type 2 website,and it is one of the author of the book mentioned above.
