No, nothing just yet. I just finally finished all I am going to do to the 58 Chevy for now, and rolled the bug outside for a wash, because I am starting back on it. I did want to thank Carlos for bringing these slicks by, because it really motivated me to crank down on the bug again and get this thing running. I'll update the thread when I make some progress! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Yeah, what are those, Thomas? They're not Enkie 92's, they don't have that ugly flat area around the lugs and I'm guessing 5x130? |

I can't stand those big flat ugly centers on the Enkies! I actually don't know exactly what these are. They're Porsche 5x130 pattern, and they're Japanese, but I don't know what brand. Not BBS, and not Enkie. That's about all I know.
JMS, I have been considering some sort of dark silver color or gunmetal. But it all depends on what color the car ends up being. And I am not even thinking about that yet. _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

My vote is for Speed Star Racing Formula Wheels
but I can not tell from the center area for sure, or if Roach has bolts on them.

I've been keeping up with this thread...I like the car! Just wondering if you've ever been out on a track day before. I've never done autocross but I've gone to a couple track days in the GTI and they have been an absolute blast, really taught me a lot about driving and my car in general. (Although sometimes I wish I did autocross, it's a lot cheaper than the track!) _________________ My '72 Super |

No, I haven't ever done a track day. With the aircooled motors I've had in my cars, I never felt confident that it would last more than 2 laps without burning up. But now, with this Subaru engine, I will be there for sure!
Well, my wife has just taken off on a 2 week road trip with the baby, to visit family in Texas and see the South West part of the country. So that means that I am totally free! I am trying to knock out as much of this build in the next two weeks as I can. My goal is to have it running, with the coolant system done, by the time she gets home.
Of course, she took both our digital cameras with her, but I will try to get pictures one way or the other. Wish me luck! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

I've been making a LOT of progress with the wife and kid away this past week!! I borrowed a camera and snapped a few shots. I'll take some better ones tomorrow when I have some daylight.
Jeff (55Superbeetle) has done a ton of awesome TIG welding for me.
We got the intake manifold and water crossover pipe finished:
I gave up on that idea of mounting the throttle body behind the intake manifold, mainly because it was too tight of a clearance, which would make it a huge pain in the ass to get to it. If I hadn't moved the engine forward in the car, there probably would have been plenty of room to do it.
Plus, I want to build a new manifold when I add a turbo, so there's no point in making it complicated if I am not even going to keep it. I just need to figure out what to do about an air cleaner, without making it look too goofy.
Upper and lower radiator mounts are now all done:
I did the upper mounts this way so that nothing will be poking through the shroud once I install it. Going for a clean and simple look. The only tricky part about keeping everything hidden is going to be installing the radiator filler neck and cap.
Gas tank sump is done:
I'll get a picture of it installed tomorrow.
And the coolant line routing is done:
View from the back (the floorjack is there to hold the dual rear sway bars up, so that I could check clearances.)
View of the front:
View from the front:
Close up of the lower radiator hose, going through the front beam:
I'm dropping the gas tank off to get boiled and sealed tomorrow, and then starting on the construction of the exhaust. Should have more pictures tomorrow! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Very cool. Did you add a bleeder point at the back of the car? How are you going to bleed the air out of the system?
For the air filter, I would just get a rubber/silicone elbow, and run a small air box from a late model car or truck. Would allow you to run a large paper air filter, and it would be lightweight (since most newer cars/trucks use plastic air boxes).
Keep going, man!

Thanks guys!!
Nick, the radiator has a petcock at the top, and I am going to add one to the water crossover pipe. Hopefully that'll be enough to get the air out of both ends. I just ordered a water filler neck, which I am thinking I'll put on a 90 degree elbow and attach it to the side of the radiator on the passenger side, so that the radiator cap is just ever so slightly higher than the top of the radiator, and a small overflow tank can go underneath. That should keep everything under the shroud, so that you don't see anything when you open the hood.
I love the idea of a plastic air box, because the last thing I want is some big anodized blingy cone filter sitting on top of my engine! I think I'll scour PickNPull tomorrow during my lunch break and try to come up with something simple and clean looking. Thanks for the suggestion! _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

Take a walk through the newer GM cars. A lot of Buicks, Olds, and Pontiac midsize cars with 3800 engines have a nice, simple air box that takes a 5x5" square paper filter.
Should be simple to TIG a couple mounting ears to the manifold to mount it.
Good luck, and keep the pics coming!
What are you going to end up doing with the exhaust?

Got a bit more done tonight. First I pulled the engine and installed the clutch.
After putting the engine back in, I bolted the rear fenders back on. They were removed when I drilled out the spot welds for the rear apron, and I never got them tightened back on. I was a little worried that the rear tires would poke out past the fenders, but they fit great!
Nick, I have a used Magnaflow muffler here that I am going to mount pretty much the same as you did yours, hanging under the rear bumper. When I add the turbo in the future, that will all change, but for now it seems like a great solution.
And here's a picture that shows the holes I drilled in the gas tank before having the sump welded in place:
The whole point of doing this is so that I don't ever starve the engine for fuel under hard cornering. The gas tank is off at a radiator shop being boiled and coated right now. When I get it back, I will finish up the fuel line installation.
And a better shot of the coolant tube routing, from the front of the car:
Tomorrow the plan is to hit Picknpull at lunch time for an air filter box, and then start on the exhaust after work. _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

that looks to be a reversed turbo manifold no, or at least not the cross pipe?
and I had no idea that there was radiator hose like that available... you have got me thinkin roach
good ground clearance too, how much was your oil pan shortened?
pst, heres a link to my lack luster build thread

I was checking out your thread just the other day. I like it, man! I'm looking forward to watching it come together.
Those coolant hoses say NAPA on them, but I believe we ordered them from Renegade Hybrids. Those are what they use on their 914 swaps. I went into this project not wanting to put big rubber hoses on the bottom of my car, because it just seems like a disaster waiting to happen. but after actually seeing these hoses and getting them mounted up, I am not worried about it at all. Plus, my dad's 914 with a WRX motor has these under it, with a LOT less ground clearance, and they haven't been a problem.
And you're right, it's a WRX turbo manifold. To be honest, the ground clearance to that crossover pipe is not great. But it's good that the exhaust hangs down lower than the oil pan. I don't remember exactly how much was removed from the pan. Somewhere around 2.5 or 3 inches? _________________ RIP HBB 10.10.84 - 12.25.09

FWIW, that Magnaflow is going to be pretty loud. You might be able to help it by making sure your tailpipe clears the fender completely (by at least 2-3"), and turn the tailpipe to point straight out the back of the car.
My Magnaflow setup hid out under the fender, and the shorty tailpipe didn't quite clear the fender. When I had that setup on it, the exhaust had a pretty bad drone when cruising around.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to run it and see how it goes, but I did expect it to be pretty loud. But seeing as how the car has no interior at all, and the engine is solid mounted, I am not expecting it to be the most comfortable thing to drive down the freeway. haha
Got a bit more done tonight. I built the exhaust, although I still need to take it over to Jeff to get it TIG welded. For now, it's just tacked together with my MIG welder:
And I love the way it turned out! Having moved the engine forward gave me a little extra room so that I could tuck the muffler a little tighter, so I took advantage of that. That exhaust tip is not the final design, it's just what I had lever over in scraps, so if it looks goofy, I will cut that off and put something else there that points backwards more. And obviously, that little thin exhaust flange is only there for mockup. I have a nice thick stainless flange on the way.
I also mounted the Walbro fuel pump:
And I finally remembered to take a close up of one of the wheels, to hopefully help identify them:

Exhaust looks good! I would just grab a 90* elbow for the tailpipe, and aim it straight out the back. As you have it now, that thing is going to drone like crazy when cruising around. It drives you nuts after a while!
Nick
P.S. Have you actually test fit that used header? Does it clear the transmission cradle? I was thinking about building a new exhaust with one of those Borla-copy headers from eBay... _________________ (o\ ! /o) '69 Beetle---Subaru EJ22 powered---SOLD
