Thanks, guys, for further input. Just wanted to clarify that a bit before I suck it up and buy the hydo cam.
SlowLane, had visions of GEX running through my mind as well... Maybe, they grabbed what was available from the shelf, like how they graft body parts together between model changes.. it rhymes with the company policy, somehow. _________________ '80 VW Westfalia

I'm just going to resurrect this thread, because it's all confusing.
I found out that the last two digets of the camshaft number determine the pitch of the gear. That pitch is also stamped into the edge of the gear.
The part number of the gear is always the same (either alloy or magnesium).
So why does the camshaft number changes with different pitches, while the gear number stays the same? The pitch is in the gear, not in the camshaft...
Does anybody knows if the valve timing of the GE camshaft (022 109 017 A) is the same as for the CV Vanagon camshaft (071 109 021)?
I need a new camshaft for my GE engine and the only hydro camshaft that is still for sale is the Vanagon one....
Here is what I found in factory literature:
021 109 015 M --- CA engine --- pitch -3
021 109 017 M --- CA engine --- pitch -2
021 109 019 M --- CA engine --- pitch -1
021 109 021 M --- CA engine --- pitch +/-0
021 109 023 M --- CA engine --- pitch +1
021 109 025 M --- CA engine --- pitch +2
021 109 027 M --- CA engine --- pitch +3
022 109 017 A --- GE engine --- pitch +/-0 (hydro, no rings)
071 109 015...025 --- (CU?) CV engine --- (Vanagon, hydro)
021 109 021 J --- 1700 auto, 1800 engine --- pitch -2 (two rings, one left and one right)
021 109 017 L --- CE, AP, CJ, GD engine --- pitch -2 (+/-0?)
021 109 101 F --- Z engine (VW 411 1700cc) + W, EA, EB, EC, AN, GA, GB (Porsche 914) >>>> ONE single ring _________________ Modern cars are nothing but visual pollution !

Removed the camshafts out of two GE engines (1977 and 1978).
The numbers on the camshafts are the same, namely: 022 109 101 A
The numbers on the gears are also the same, namely: 021 109 111 C
But after the VW sign on the gear, there is a difference:
1977 (pitch -3): 9H
1978 (pitch -2): 4H
So, the story of different camshaft numbers (last three digets) representing different pitches, counts for older camshafts, but not for GE (= hydro) camshafts.
Anybody with more info on this topic/removed a camshaft and wrote down the numbers? _________________ Modern cars are nothing but visual pollution !

I could not find that part number listed. I sold a new T4 914-4 GA cam (021.109.101K -3 gear), and new 914-4 lifters for about $250. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |
