in my household the bug is known as the girl car, so yeah, girls do like VWs. though i asked my six year old the other day whether she would like to fix up a bug and paint it pink when she's old enough to drive or whether she'd like to have her own bus to fix up and she said "bus" withought hesitation because that way she could fit all of her friends in it. cool.
you can probably play this guy. i'm a liberated woman and all that but it never hurts to play the dumb girl card when you have to and make the guy feel like he's doing you a favor. maybe he really doesn't want to sell, but be nice and be cute so that if he does decide to sell at least he'll want to sell to you and no one else. and also make sure you have your cell phone handy when you go over there again because he sounds kind of creepy. (that's the momma in me talking). good luck.

Back yards all over the world are home to rusting buses owned by stubborn oddballs who simply will not part with them. They are going to fix them up you see, any day now. And they slowly rust away. It is a very common phenomena. |

The secret is to scrap them before they rust. That way you can get top dollar for them. I have probably junked 10 or 15 bays in the last 3 years just because I have no where to keep them and no one wants to buy them, not even for 50 bucks. |

Just where are you located Michael? If it's not too far, I'll start buying all your $50 buses . Peace! _________________

*** UPDATE ***
Well, well well... I have officially given up on those 2 bay windows of that creepy guy (i have much better thing on my horizons!!).
I came across another Bay just sitting in some guys driveway (he was another hippy guy haha) and i asked if he wanted to sell blah blah.. He did not, even though it had been sitting for 5 years, and the motor dont work (he killed it with oil thickener). Was in fairly good condition and restorable to say the least. So i have no chance at getting that one either.... Still, i have better things on at the moment
I have found a guy who has around 20 bay windows on his property. The one i am looking at and probably WILL be buying (im going down with a handfull of cash to put under his nose) is a camper, (74???? not too sure on that). There are soooo many other parts around from the other ones that i should be able to pick up from him for mine.
It has been in a minor accident on the side, which is nothing that a few panels from the other unrestorable bays wont fix. It has no motor but is in very rust free and solid condition. Has no motor but that does not matter to me at the moment. Does not have a glove box lid, but there are sooo many others on the other ones i shall make a collection .
I have absolutely no idea what kind of camper it is. There is tonnes of stiff shoved inside it so i cant see well, however it appears to be good condition. It say 60,000kms on the clock and this may be original (1st time round) judging by its condition.
I want to know if i should be looking for any other parts lying round off other bays i should snap up along with mine. And has anyone got a link to camper conversion information?? When i go tomorrow i will take pictures and try and post some up for everyone.
Peace out!

I'm suprised no one has gone on about what years or options to look for. I'll agree that I may be bias because I've mostly owned VW's with Type 1 engines but I'd suggest staying away from 72 and newer with the Type 4 engine as they are harder to remove the engine from. A bus from 1971 and back has a panel at the rear that you can remove so you dont have to jack up the bus to slide the engine out from underneath. Also the parts for a Type 4 engine are more expensive and less common to find than Type 1. The #1 reason that I chose to own and drive Aircooled Volkswagen's was avalibility of parts, #2 reason was cost of parts. I have exclusivly owned ACVW's since 1986. I own several more VW's than I have listed below and the engine parts are interchangable with the exception of my wifes' 72 transporter. That I intend to convert to a Type 1 engine as soon as she gets her license back. Good luck on your quest and keep us posted. I hope whatever you find brings you as much joy as my Westfalia has. _________________ My wife giggles everytime I say "Gland Nut".

Not necessarily!!!! Yes I do ENVY you type 1 guys for having that little removable panel but with "Newer" technology comes better preformance and safety!! Ohh by the way....AUSOME too hear about girl intrested in VW as much as I am!! Wheres my VW obesssed girl... ....anyways....back on track!! I prefer the type IV's due to the power and yes parts are slightly harder to find but thats half the fun!! No matter what year or engine size you get there are gunna be those hard to find parts that come with any car!! Gets what looks nice, fits your needs and has the least amount of rust!! Good luck!!! _________________ '73 Transporter 1.7L Dual Carb

It does have minor damage on the drivers side rear quarter, but i have organised for a free replacement panel to weld on. Its mssing a glove box lid but i can get one of those aswell off him. I dont hav pics yet, i will take some when i get the bus home which should be in the next week |

Amanda,
Are you aware of http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/? There are a number of members from Perth who could no doubt point you in the right direction to get any work done that you don't plan to do yourself and may even come around to help drink beer and kick the tyres!

Upon closer inspection of my Bus, it appears to be a Sundial camper conversion. Are these desirable? i need to fix some of the wood as it has become water-logged, but i dont think it should be too hard. I shall try to get pictures tonight. |

Here are some pictures of my bus!!!.. (including pics of the water tank. I couldnt look under it cause its raining and wet outside at the moment).
And my little helper who is only 9 months old. I think he knows what a kombi is. He waits at the sliding door before i open it and 'pounces' in and runs to the front passenger seat and sits there like king of the castle. haha
