I have the Latest Rage Porsche-style breather tower. It also fits with the CB hex linkage. I've since re-routed the #1/2 valve cover hose and also use a filter vent on the other outlet:

Thanks for the pix Neil68,I was wondering if the Latest Rage would fit with hex bar linkage,I had a Custum box made for the drag Bug 3" exhast pipe 18" long with bungs welded to it 2 on the ends mounted high and two more top and bottom for a drain and cheap little filter/breather up top all mounted on the firewall, works great,Madmike _________________ 'Black Ice'Drag Buggy 'Turbo'

Hi,
Would this work?
Thinking of using a canister like this (have one spare from an old tractor), routing the hose from the oil-filler into an welded on tube-end and into the canister.
Put foam inside to collect the oil, and drill the top lid as to ventilate it.
Would it work? It will be for looks mostly. And because I don`t think the tube going down through the tin adequate, and I won`t vent it to a carb.

I wouldn't. It needs baffles to separate the oil from the air. _________________ '67 Sunroof

borrowed breather pic from
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=432954
If you look at the box inside you will see plates at 45 deg pointing into the flow.
as air containing oil vapors makes it's way around the baffles, air is forced to make turns. Anything in the air, in this case oil droplets cannot make those turns as easy and ends up flying into the baffle plates. Then droplets will collect and drain back into the engine.
The more turns air has to make, the better the breather. In the old days folks would stuff copper steel wool looking things. Same idea as oil bath breather, where coconut husks provided labyrinth for air to snake through while dirt particles would get separated out of the air.
You could make your own breather by taking a pipe and cutting at 45degrees into it and slide plates into the cuts then weld them from outside. Cap both sides of the pipe with fittings and you got in and out.
You could also find a baffle right under the generator stand. Ever wonder why it's so important to install it the right way? with baffles pointing down forward.

Redhot.
Your Idea is fine. You dont need the slats. The foam is fine or you can use a steel scrubbing pad that you can find at the supermarket. The whole Idea is to give the oil someplace to hit, reduce velocity then filter back down to the crankcase. Just make sure you have either multi holes or a hole of at lease 1.5" in diameter in the top of the can.
Congratulations for trying to try something yourself instead of just buying a part. |

Don't forget, you want to have good air volume/flow, not restricted. I would think to use something out of the ordinary, the ports fo the hose attachmnets should be enlarged. _________________ '67 Sunroof

has anyone had any experience using a gwd breather (see pic)
these will fit into the space in my spyder a bit better, as the engine is reverse (mid engined)
I am concerned about the lack of baffles. Thinking that I will connect to each of the carb tops, each of the heads and to a connection at the oil filler
no vent to atmosphere, thinking that the slight vacuum from the carbs can take care of that
what do you guys think? |

This was an afterthought, but it seems to work well. Didn't spend a fortune and it came out OK. Thought about mounting behind the shroud but the foam does need to be cleaned from time to time and it's easy to get to here.

This is a pretty cool thread, keep it going!
There are two obvious ways you can plumb these which is to the carb and to the valve covers.
I've only used the carb because its been easier but have always been interested if the valve cover way would have more success.
