my mistake then, all hte parts i had were for a customer, who i thought purchased everything from van cafe, all the boxes were from van cafe. so i apologize for that. well, in that case, then the go westy wheels, if that is what this person purchased, will fit on the van cafe big brake kit, but barely. like paper thin. _________________ "go slower, go lower!!!"

Worked on the van today...
Seems only the drivers side is rubbing, so I may just end up grinding the insides of the rims and evening them out and grind the caliper a bit. Put all the tires on for the first time, look sweet.... no camera today though..
Too bad I waited a day too long to order those 16" steel rims from tirerack.com... The were $15 and now they're $39... oh well...... They look tight. _________________ -Lorenzo

I mounted a one of the 16" steel rims on the front of my syncro to verify that they will work with my big brakes. I gave it the "hand test"- which is simply stick my hand between the rim and anything that it passes by and it passed with flying colors. My 15" SA steel wheel will not work with my Audi G60 brakes. Any custom rim made from a 14" center like the ones that GoWesty sells will not work as well.

Yes, GrindGarage that is the 16" mercedes steel wheel available through the tire rack. The price has gone up from $15 to $39 though. There are no provisions for a center cap like the 14" steel wheel. I am going to have mine painted or powdercoated silver and run them as is. |

That looks great, man !!! I was fortunate to have ordered 6 of those mercedes 16"ers at $15 each several days before they went up in price. Haven't put tires on yet though.
What size tires did you go with - are they Bfg 215-70R16's ?
Also, are you using the Loogy ball seat lug nuts ? |

Thanks brospeh,
I plan on gettting the portion around the windows painted black as well. An I am currently fussing with some stripe/graphic ideas I've seen on some orignal Syncros
These are actually the SA 15s, I got them to fit, just had to grind the bumps on the welds down a bit. Yeah I missed that sale by like a day so I am keeping these. Just ordered and another SA 15. Goiing to run a 6 tire rotation, seems the best route to go, but $$$$.
I'm not familiar with Loogy nuts. I'm simply running the stock ones, I added longer studs so the closed ended lugs dont fit..... Anyone know where to get ones for longer studs? Also, I'd really like to find some type of center cap that works with these I've seen some black rubber ones that look pretty dope. _________________ -Lorenzo

I also have a set of SA 15" from Vancafe and love em. You don't need the special lugnuts from Loogy if you're not using the Mercedes 16" steelies. But you might check with Loogy to see about open end or longer closed end lugnuts or even your local flaps.

The black plastic center caps you mentioned are made for the OEM VW 16" steel wheels and are not available retail in NA. But you can get them from Germany - Lars Neuffer :

Like most dealings with overseas companies, they can be slow, communications spotty, but Lars eventually will come thru. And these caps will work with the SA 15" steels too. The cost varies all the time based on the dollar/euro fluctuation thing. |

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the links, I did look at the stuff lars had on the german ebay, He couldnt verify if the would fit the 15" Steels though. I'd assume theyd fit based on the center hole being the same size.
Also that other link doesent work you posted at the end. _________________ -Lorenzo

I sent two links and when I rechecked they worked. Maybe you mean what I underlined at the end for emphasis - it's not a link.
Yes, the size of the wheel doesn't matter - if the caps can fit over the center hole and the 5x112 lug nuts/bolts can hold it on then it'll work. These caps have little tapered feet that slip under the bolt/nut heads. |

I haven't mounted mine yet but based on some research they'll bolt up to a syncro without mods/spacers/adapters/borings.
2wd requires spacers, I believe for the rear wheels only, but there has been quite a bit of chat recently on the Gerryvanagon list, Yahoo Syncro and Yahoo Westwesties, and even another thread somewhere here on theSamba.
The center hole is the same as for the SA 15"ers, but the 5x112 nut/bolt holes are a little smaller but will still fit the stock 14 mm fasteners without boring. Loogy sells the 22mm ball seat head, 14 mm nuts/bolts strongly recommended with this Mercedes 16" steel wheel. That is, the heads are a little smaller than stock and, for safety, make better contact with the slightly smaller holes.

I believe everything mentioned is accurate but for 2wd fitment check some of those other chatroom discussions. I drive syncros so that's what I focused on more when researching. |

The 16" merc rims will bolt straight on with the correct hardware. The lugnuts from loogy have the correct size ball seat for the rim and the correct 14x1.5mm opening to fit the vanagon. I am not aware of any stock lugnuts that will work safely. I would never consider running any rim that the lug nuts do not correctly fit the profile of the lug bore from the fear of losing a wheel. I do not know what is needed to make them fit a 2wd but a syncro is not a problem. The pictures I posted have the correct hardware. |
