Bengt H. If you would like to go TOP SPEED in Sweden, check with the Gottenberg Landvetter Airport. Hans Dahlback ran his massively turboed but street licensed 55 bug their in 1988 to a top speed of 174.705 miles per hour(of course, this was NOT a 36hp!). It would sure be great to see what your super 36er tops out at!

Burly

Thanks for your info Burly, I will keep it in mind. This summer I will drive the car as much as possibile and maybe next winter I will add bigger carbs and mannifolds, think I can get some more hp with that.

I am pretty sure those are Ray Schubert's custom manifolds???? Ray made these castings to go between Solex 40P11 carbs and the Denzel Heads.

Schubert has been up to a lot of secrets lately that need better publication. He doesn't get much attention outside of the San Jose CA area but he has few tricks up his sleeve.

Check out http://www.speedwellusa.com/ for vented 36 horse valve covers and a few other tricks. I think there are a lot of goodies not mentioned on the site that are coming. Tom Niedernhofer has something to do with all this Denzel stuff too... and Mark and Larry are no doubt involved somewhere... it is all very mysterious with these Neu Denzel guys... It's like a secret society of early 36 horse high horsepower in underground workshops up there in the Bay Area. I think there is a secret handshake involved... and codewords.

I've heard of early morning oval window high speed test runs on the back roads of Southern Monterey county where the police are scarce. Lots of early Porsche brakes heading north to Ray's land up there I think too.

Yes....there exists a "secret society" in these parts, and it's all about 36hp vintage speed. We actually drive our cars up here, and drive them fast....the cars don't sit in a garage waiting just for Kelley Park to take place! Everything has to be from the "period", or it ain't allowed! I think we must have been spotted heading down HWY 25 to Solvang??

We have made a bucket-full of Denzel parts for no less than a dozen Denzel engine owners, and there really is no credit being given to Ray...so yes, to help with Jesse's engine we stepped in...otherwise, those manifolds wouldn't exist. Yep, some credit would be nice. Shame on you And, there were at least 2 styles of intake manifolds for the "Sandcast" Solex 40-PII carbs....this is the final style you see in the previous photo(s). We would like to see if all of the "proper" Denzel engine details will be part of Jesse's engine!

There are 2 directions to go when talking Denzel engines....for the VW or for the Denzel. Trust me, the production can engines are different than the VW "Kit" engines. So, how big can you go? Right now we have an 87mm x 74 mm stroke with trick Denzel heads.....stay tuned......

A roller crank from a Porsche 4 cam motor will drop right in a 36 horse case. If you look around, you should be able to come up with one for about a 100K.

Vintage Blown is just amazing.

Here is my 1500cc 40hp at well over 100hp.

I am gathering parts to do the same to a 36hp for my 59 K/G. I have one Denzel head and am looking for a mate. Any leads cash or trade??

356 "B" 74mm Crankshaft, 912 Rods, I don't know where that "Timing Gear" assembly came from....rumored to be from an old "Drag Car".
Heads will be Okrasa. Case is a 1959.
Engine will go in 1956 VW Cab or 1958 Ghia....owner is thinking it over.
Getting ready for "Drag Day" October 2007.

I am getting ready to start on my Okrasa engine and I have a few cases to choose from.
-'57
-'55
-unstamped replacement case
-and a '53 25hp case (which I don't think would work)

What would be the best choice considering each one is in decent/good condition?
I also have a 1960 case currently in the car I could use, but that would mean the car would be down until the Okrasa was done.

Here's another delima, I have and Okrasa and an old Empi crank.
Both are 8 doweled, non counterweighted, and I think Think they have the same stroke.
Which would be a better choice?
I am leaning toward the Okrasa.

I may be mistaken, but didn't Empi market Okrasa cranks in those days?
For some reason I hink they did...

Use the best crank you have, I think its the same manufacturer. That goes for the other question you have about the case, use the best you can find.

I agree, especially since once it is built, you cannot see the crank. If both cases are "blank", no numbers, again it makes sense to use the best one. It's not like it is going to be original anyway.

I know this is not a particularly a Drag strip question but one that most of the Vintage Speed guys contributing to this topic must have thought about at some time or other.

Okrasa Cooling Spirals
I'm sure most of you can guess the question but the usual answer that the Spiral will only heat the airflow rather than cool it never appears with comparitive figures to back up this theory.

I've used a cooling spiral for a couple of years on my Judson set-up and never had any overheating problems so has anyone over the years done any comparitive tests or be prepared to speak in favour of them?
