i just got out of the bath.
i parked the split in front of my block at home, and read the odometer:

had 817 on it when i left to the technical inspection, 1061 when we left Bucharest, now it reads ... some 5600km Very Happy

just a small problem with a light bulb socket on the rear, nothing else. we drove thorough Germany, Austria, Hungary and Romania, and i can say this was THE best trip i ever had in my life. i had Mircea with me as pilot and copilot, we discovered bit by bit the wonders of modern Europe in a 59 years old car and got the well deserved respect even from the Porsche 911 owners on the autobahn.. Cool

met all the nice fellows from thesamba there, was very nice to actually meet the people and their families there. meant so much to me to get to know them a bit and share the VW hobby with all of you.

more to come in a few days as i sort the pics.

Im glad this Split has finally found a good owner. Congrats on all your work, these little cars have their own personality compared to other cars on the road and the fact that they have survived 50+ years just shows how awesome they really are.

Hi Mircea Very Happy

I think Chris ended up taking his bus to a friend in Belgium. They fitted a spare engine that his friend had but it didn't run properly so he left it there, and it is being recovered back to the UK very soon.

We had an awesome road trip back home, it was good to drive the problems we had at the campsite out of our system! Twisted Evil I drove the Kempes most of the way back to the port, and loved every minute behind the wheel Cool (Even though I never really mastered the crash gearbox Laughing ) There are a few photos over on the barndoor section here -

I have sent a claim off to to the travel insurance, but none of us are getting our hopes up about getting anything Mad

ok folks! this time we set sails to the Gross Glockner pass in Austria..
just kidding! Laughing

we (Mircea and me) went to a meeting in Sibiu, 300km away. Sibiu is an old german town in Romania, also known as Hermannstadt, which dates from the XII-th century. I did not want to forget these facts, because Sibiu is definitely a place to go in Romania. beautiful buildings, nice folks and beautiful girls Wink While in Romania, go there! and if travelling from Bucharest, go thorough Transfagarasan Pass. You will see what the guys from Top Gear saw: a beautiful winding road, nicest road to take in a split... as seen in the link i will post Smile

I am not sure what I would prefer.
Beeing on that road with a beetle or on the single trails with a mountain bike. Maybe up with the beetle and down with the bike. Razz

having a short summer, well, i thought this winter i should do something different. so, with the right timing... i just got what you can see... is this a 25 horser? well, i guess it is. year? unknown. but i guess 1953 1954 the latest?

what i could see: D regulator, big nut , thin lip gen pulley, 25hp crank pulley, split era fuel pump(but maybe 6mm line) . the shroud seems 30 hp.. with the banana pressing, i was hoping for a 52 only type, guess i will have to use the seamed shroud in the basement. also, the generator belt looks split type with louvers..

unknown wingnut airfilter, magneto, 28pci carb, etc

the water pump is missing but i have no use for it, the cart will be staying in Norway a while.. i don't know if i will get it with the engine as well.

now, on to find a 52 split gearbox, to go cruising the right way! ah yes, 6 volts as well!! Laughing

i will be selling the parts i won't need, like magneto, airfilter, carb (if it's the early version without vacuum port) or maybe trade the parts for what my split needs

Nice score. Definitely a d 25hp. Probably a '53 but the details of the industrial motors don't necessarily follow exactly along with the car engines.

It used to have a coil on the shroud and has heater outlets on the back of the "shoeboxes". I don't see a Volkswagen ID tag on the shroud and the screen over the fan looks different from the ones you usually see and it has a sedan back breast plate. Split battery cover too I think. Might very well be a motor pulled out of a sedan and adapted to that water pump.

The wheels on the trailer make it look older than the engine. That would make a cool pull behind trailer with a Westfalia like shell built on it.

update, serial number is -1-0523081 so a january 53, 100% zwitter engine. looks like someone put in a sedan engine but kept some industrial parts like air filter, magneto..

other serial is KD 321072 . sorry but the engine is now in Norway waiting to be shipped , so it will take a while to get and post exact details.

That looks like a neat rig. It could be desirable. You might be able to get someone to trade a restored engine for the whole thing.

next, on the list... preparing a proper radio faceplate to assemble a becker monza radio with blaupunkt guts! Laughing i like the idea of keeping the clock in, just to have the original split dash look with original instruments. the metal net was sourced easy, will be a bit tricky to have the becker monza knobs made as close as original as possible.

meanwhile, the split will have a "garage" to spend the winter. not done yet, just because i liked the idea of open space. will have a sliding door on the right side, and a half glass wall on the left side, foldable doors on the middle. in the pic, my small fiat abarth 595 for a select company. the dog was there in the pic but actually just visiting. a dachshund is the guardian, pics of him later Smile

Monday the "new" engine showed up at my garage. well, what can i say :

KD engine, looks ok, but won't turn a full turn on all cylinders (maybe stuck valve or maybe one or 2 damaged cylinders ). lots of dirt on it and under it, some parts with austausch square on them. LATER EDIT: there was a stuckk valve, now the engine turns ok

pressure plate has a small tooth piece broken but seems ok , i will try to rebuild it,
clutch disk will be replaced.

the cart that was the engine on doesn't look vw at all, not even the engine mount. it has 19" wheels from KPZ, with motorcycle good year tires on them. i will assemble it sometime later this winter.

now the fun begins: getting correct parts, a 383 dizzy, cleaning and painting tins, tear the engine apart, measure it, replace what need replaced, put new seals and gaskets, etc etc. the flywheel is trashed, teeth are worn, will have to buy another one. will the 36hp one fit ok? is there anyone selling just the crown to be replaced?

i am a bit worried about the serial... because it's modified that way, i hope i can put it there and get it registered as such. usually is not ok to try and erase a serial from an engine. was KD in Germany, KDS in Sweden and KDF in Finland etc? this engine is bought from Sweden but seems to be repaired in Germany?

after a month of pause, the split is in the garage with the Fiat, its battery sleeps with me in the bedroom... Laughing
as updates, i traded the zwitter carb and fuel pump for 8 mm split fuel pump and 26VFIS carb, i added a Dehne fuel gauge project to the split project and a Dehne sender project to the Dehne gauge project (sounds confusing, right? Laughing )
Andi Oval56 was providing a 51/52 dehne face for the gauge, wonderful quality, i repaired the cable and bowden tube and that's all. i can't wait to drill the split dash! Evil or Very Mad
i got 2 rear original cloth panel, so now the hunt is on for a complete split interior, maybe in time for Hessisch Oldendorf 2013.
i traded the bosch early fog light for a Bekowa 6 slat roof rack, got the bumper guards to a rechrome shop, hope i get them done ok.
a new challenge for 2012 is on my list, Austrian Alps. for that in the menu we have nicely done or redone brakes, right side mirror, Dehne fuel gauge, roofrack, Becker Monza clone radio and soon to be, a headliner net to keep the needed maps Wink
