I am pretty close to disregarding the metal clips completely. As the fly stretches they come loose then inevitably the wind sets them to clanking on the side of the van. Getting up at 3AM in the rain to fix them is not cool. I'll keep an eye out for a more appropriate clip. |
Replace them with some cinch straps and you'll eliminate the problem. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

Does anyone know or has anyone installed it on a Bay Window Westfalia? Been torn on making my own. I have a extra rainfly I saved from a previous ground tent that we have just drapped over the pop top on our 79. But like the looks of this. |

Thanks.Wasn't sure if dimensions of it would be the same for the Bay's vs Vanagon. By the looks of it, they look the same, and should work. Just curious on feedback from anyone who has it on their Bay. |

I have read reports of this keeping the wind out a little. Has anyone really tried to measure it -- say camped without it one night, then put it up? It can get cold in the mountains, we have insulation for the pop-top but I am more concerned with cutting out as much wind as possible - much like layering, keep the wind off your skin and you'll feel much better. _________________ 1986 Vanagon -- Syncro, Westy

Installed a Wasser Stopper on my '84 Westy today.
The kit comes neatly packaged with all necessary hardware, instructions, and 16" prop bar (actually useful). Requires some basic tools for install: Drill w/ 1/8" drill bit, tape measurer, Phillips screw driver, ladder. I was able to install by myself in about 30 minutes.
Kick stand in place, ready to install snaps. The luggage rack makes a handy tool tray
The instructions say to find the exact center of the pop top and mount the center snap in the middle. Westfalia found the center already so I had to off-set the snap a hair.
3 of 5 snaps in place
All 5, snapped
After the snaps are installed, buckle the long straps through the cab.
My '84 has a wooden rail under the poptop that the tent is stapled to. These straps simply screw right into the wood. 2 on each side.
Velcro and buckle closure on back
The last step is to attach 6 tabs to the rain gutter. I did not find them to fit too well. Removing the rubber strip on the top of the gutter helped some but I may need to modify the clip to fit more securely
Install complete
Next step, field test. Drive, relax, repeat! |

Did the same a few weeks ago...over all pretty good but I don’t like the side clips that are supposed to hook on to the rain gutters. They have a too tight curve and don’t grip well. Also, the strap that goes in the front doors and hold the front of the fly down tight to the van is not that great of a method. I’ll try modifying both. However, as is, the clips do attach to the Shady Boy awning box. No way to get them to attach to the gutter with the awning box in the way.

I'll be curious to see what you come up with. I'm scratching my head thinking of a solution... |

My friend Simon came upon something that helps a bit with the strap up front, that is leading it through the grab handle on the pass. side. Of course that just help pull down that side, but it is maybe a hint of what to do.

On our last trip, we avoided the strap thru the cabin--we simply ran a couple bungees down the nose of the van and hooked them under the bumper. Care was taken to avoid chafing the paint, it wasn't windy. _________________ 1986+ Wolfsburg Weekender Pop-Top 2.3 WBX Manual Trans |

I spent a couple of hours playing around with the fly, wanting to fix- what I see as problems - the gutter angles/hooks and the front strap system.
I'm just using what I had on hand, and this is only preliminary stuff.
I had some longer metal hold down hooks, I sewed some velcro on to them. These hooks have a more obtuse angle on them compared to the Go Westy ones. I also attached some webbing attached hooks and buckle for the front straps. I added some silicone tape wrap to those hooks.
The new angles are longer, so I stuck on some velcro to the clip itself to provide a bit more area of velcrotude.
The new angles/clips do seem to hold on firmer.
Where my ShadyBoy awning is, I left the stock hooks, they are fed up from below and the hook part can't pass through the space.
The front strap mod is not so successful, but not completely ass.
An annoying curl in the material at the front.
Well, it is a start, I'll be trying to get it a little better. I'm not happy with the front strap idea.

It looks like you guys got the same hooks I did. I called GoWesty and they said there was a batch of hooks that had been supplied with the wrong profile and they sent me some new ones that work much better. Might want to give them a ring and see what they say. |

thanks for the tip, never thought about a hook mix up on their part. I'll call/email them.

I received a prompt reply from Go Westy after I emailed them about the gutter hook issue. New hooks are being sent to me. Impressed by this quick customer service.

Would it be possible to post a pic of the incorrect/correct hooks side by side?
