Anyone out there running reduction boxes in their baja or rail? Im interested in this conversion for my off road buggy w/early type 3 torsion housing/springplates. Ive seen pics of the John johnson adaptors that lay the boxes flat which widens and lengthens the wheelbase a bit but I would like to install them upright to gain ground clearance. I think they had upright adaptors too... this guy has a set in his Baja...
http://www.c-zone.net/northgte/baja57.htm
Can i just fabricate new springplates out of my old ones that locate the boxes where I want them. What about leaning them a bit so I get some ground clearance AND a slightly longer wheel base. I have a donor 66 bus with everything. Any thoughts appreciated...

I'm running gear redux's on the back of the baja right now. They came with a redneck springplate adapter. I"m running them upright for the ground clearance. I absolutely love the gear ratio, especially because I'm into hill climbing and rock crawling. But they do have their drawbacks; horrible unsprung weight, massive wheel hop, more parts to break down the road.
It's a plus and minus. On my friends baja we're running a stock trans, soon to be a bus conversion. He drives his fast and wild, I drive mine relatively slow. My top speed is different and I am shifting gears more often. A lot of old timers used to use the gear redux bus trans because it was an inexpensive upgrade over stock. But now with custom built transaxles with custom gearing, there isn't such a need to use the redux setup anymore. I love my bus swingaxle but in the future I see a custom built IRS bus box with low gears and 3x3 or 4x4 trailing arms. _________________ CU05 w/HBB

Thanks for the info. I plan to do a lot of climbing and slower technical stuff and like the idea of the lower gearing and instant ground clearance for low$$ My ride is an old school budget rail w/stock bug transaxle and 31s and it is good on the flat but struggles on the hills, I dont care how fast I get up the hill so long as I make it. Do the no-hop kits work? So are your springplates just made from the bug and bus ones? Thanks! |

OK, so I wouldn't suggest making your own adapters, like the farmer brown setup I'm running. Get a set John Johnson adaptors.
Speaking of which, anyone have a set they want to sell me??

They are not the johnsons, But I make a good set ( I use them myself). They are cnc plasma cut from 3/16 steel, then welded in a jig. Go to http://www.bugzyla.com and click on the parts link. I have sold 7 sets so far with no complaints. RWS even owns a set. These are the upright version for lift. If somebody will send me detailed pics, I could fab some like the johnson adapters. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

I just asked the same question in the chats. I was told they bolt up the same. Just different drums and ratios. I'll be getting a set of Alpine gear boxes to bolt up on mine. _________________ CU05 w/HBB

I have recently installed the Johnson kit with a big nut tranny and redux boxes in my manx. Besides the issue of unsprung weight the set up works awesome. By the way I have a small nut tranny with boxes and adapters for a type 1 chassis for sale cheap! Search the classifieds. I would love to get this stuff off the floor in my garage. |

I run gear reduction boxes and axles from a 57 bus with a built type 1 trans. I've done a custom doubled up spring plate with some upright adapters. I use suspension straps made from seatbelts and coil over shocks.
I love the setup except on the highway.
Offroad it kicks a$$.
It hops alot but it's half the fun. |

I was under the impression that the bus gear reducted transaxles rotated differently than a bug. Thus by mating a gear reduction axle to a regular bug trans would give you 4 reverse and 1 forward, unless you flipped the R&P. _________________ CU05 w/HBB

Vanhag, You are correct. You have to flip the R&P Carrier to make it a reverse rotation. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

Do I dare answer this one??? Couple of answers... before OR after hockey season...... before or after marriage.... before or after your T4 conversion....
REAL ANSWER..... it's t he hear of mfg... kind of like the pre 61 trannies on a T1 tranny.
PUBLIC NOTE. Assuming I'm buying these, they'll get shipped to Bugzylla.... they may be available again..... since he'd have a pattern.
Haven't heard back from Kanobe about the buying details.

The small nut axles have a 36mm nut to hold the drum on, and the large nut has a 46mm nut to hold the drum on. Besides that, the large nut came in 63 1/2 and earlier buses, and the small nut 63 1/2 and later. The large nut axles are quite a bit stronger, and have a different mounting bolt pattern on the boxes. Tim10 Let me know if you get the adapters. _________________ Daryll http://www.azbaja.com P.R.

Zylla.
RWS refuses to sell the mounts... if we could find someone in Cali, maybe they could buy them (I'll pay) then send them to you.
Still interested.
