Hi! My name is Jonathan and I'm curently working on a 3dimensional model of this wonderful classic bus. I found this great forum searching the web 4 referens pictures and blueprints for the model. I guess Im kind of stuck now becouse most of the reference I found are in diferent angels, that makes it had to get the real proportions and forms. I have allready done the basic of the outside, and are currently working on the interior and doors. If anyone is kind to helping me get some good pictures and/or prints it would help alot. Many thx and exuse the "bigtime" oftopic post.

Here are some renders of the work in progress
Feel free to give me you critics and comment.

Hi Jonathon, what you're asking isn't as straightforward as it may seem. The splitscreen bus was produced from 1949 to 1967 and there were changes - and lots of 'em to every model year. You first need to establish what model year the bus is that the drawings relate too. There are many experts on here much more qualified than me to judge it, but it looks to be a late model bus, '64-'67 I'd say (don't hang me) and the US spec' bumpers would point towards a US export bus. The 23 window model came with lots of original extra goodies, and there were also a lot of optional extras. If you do a search in the gallery, under 23 window or Samba, you should get some great ideas. Good luck with the project, you've made a great start.

Thx 4 your replys... I know that it is a hard task... thats why I need the help of people with great knowledge helping me sort it out.
The plan is to model as mutch detail as posible , that means including engine and doors that can be opened without losing detail. As 3d artists always say... beauty is in the detail. The future plan is to make a quicktime virtualreality movie, maby a small animation and a lot of beautyful renders. I had also inmind to do 3 versions of it, one in new shape, one old and rusted and one more costume.

vwspijlbus > thx I will check it out

vwjosh67 > hehe... iguess you then should get out and take high resolution pictures of your cars so they can be included in the model I can always do one with yours colors Wink

Yes its very similar... the diference is that my projekt will use a more advance render engine to achive more reality using advance GI calculation. I was also planing on doing the interior in quicktime vr

I post a older testrender i did long time ago... most of it is redone

Actually, since it's a 15 window (for now) and it's got the 62-67 taillights, it looks like it's a 62 or 63.

In the end I think I will give it the surfer look and some nice safari windows. Feel free to comment and give suggestions of improvments and parts it should have to give it the nice apearence. Like how many window do you think I should make it with?

I was told in a modeling forum that the windows pillars are to wide and the roof to narow at the back, well I guess they ment the back. What do you think about that?

thats some pretty cool design work man. what type of design program are you using? keep trucking on the road you are on and you could have some really sellable artwork. i think this website would be a great market for it too.

Well, Im not sure at this point if I will do it commercial. Maby if there is a demand for cutomising it for diferent needs. The main idea of this projekt was to get more modeling expierence and to have material for a future portfolio. As I told in a prev. post I will also try to make a Quicktime VR movie and maby a animation.

This is a 360 view video file of the model I made a wile ago. It was made just for testing so it's in very low cuality.

I would love to have comments of the details of the model so I can do it more accurate.

Hi All.

I have been very bussy working on some projekt for some costumers, so I have not have any time to work on this model for some time.
I Started doing the steeringwheel today, I got a decent result very quick. But I need a nice picture/drawing of the Wolfsburg crest to the horn. I did search the web but did not find one from a straight angle and whith good resolution. So If anyone can help me, please do so. Im also searching some good image of the part under the steering wheel (light switch).

This is what I have so far. Click on the image for a bigger one

Pretty damn good, dude.
Looks like a '63 deluxe to me. ("Outie" engine vents, Flared rear wheel well)
I see nothing obviously wrong, though the side window area looks too slanted from bottom to top. Could just be an illusion, but VERY good job.

The steering wheel looks too thick on the outer grab ring.

Keep posting updates!

I think its just the view angel, but I will see what I can do. Thanx for you reply.

I did the wolfsburgcrest in illustrator to use it later as a displacement map. I did not have a greate image as reference, but this is what I came up with.

The work you're doing on the model is pretty fantastic.

Not to take anything away from that, here's an idea--most if not all 3d models I see of this type are of nice shiny "new" vehicles. Would it be possible to find a nice example of an original paint bus complete with dents and dings and rust and model it? Some of us here on thesamba would really go nuts over that! Imagine what an impressive piece that would be to add to your portfolio--quite different, quite an eye-catcher.

Just a thought.

Thx 4 the replys....
About the not shiny car.... As a mather of fact, I was planing after the model is done to do a old and rusted vercion of it. Ofcours that is a time consuming process, that requiere very good highresolution reference images of a hole bus, and specialy the details. So if anyone have a bus in that condition and a digital camera, take some pictures for me.

Anyway... along the process with the bus i encounter the dificulty to find good referens images, so many parts have been done by freehand.
