Well, I have my work cut out. I just picked up a 1965 bug that has been in a barn since 1980 - nearly 26 years!! Can you believe it?! It has only 11,650 miles on it since new !! And it is touted to be the 50,000th bug officially imported to the US as a gift to the original VW import dealer (documentation is pending). It also has A/C, an accessory rear-mounted speaker with dash board-mounted rheostat fader, seat belts that were colored to match the interior, a VDO oil temp guage that matches the font and styling of the speedo, a dealer stamped service book and the original owners manual. The Bahama Blue paint is chalky and the bumpers need rechroming. It also has chrome wheels with the regular half-moon hub caps, but the wheels need rechroming, too. It has to be cosmetically restored due to age and humid storage conditions, but I am excited about it!! It is almost eery to see the preserved "originality" under the layers of dust!
The engine turns OK and the A/C compressor turns just fine, too. I hope to get it going soon and I hope to get the A/C going, too, but I hope I can still get R-12!!
I just took out the fuel tank an it is in AMAZING condition. I dont think it will need dipping as tthere is no rust inside !
I am truly excited about this one and I want to do a true stock/OG resto.
And it looks really cool parked next to my '67, too! Here are some photos...
There are more in my gallery... _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Thanks! It is going to take some time and $$ to get it done (and done correctly) but I'm not in any hurry. I want to preserve as many original ccomponents as possible, too. Unfortunately, it will need to be repainted because there are some areas were surface rust has started from the humidity... Fortunately, no real big issues with the body!

Kent,
Wow, what a nice find. Did you find that in Florida? It doesn't look like it. I can't wait to see how that OG paint buffs out.
That's a true time-warp car. Did you steal it?

What a great find, and in such good condition. The engine reflects the low mile even with the dust of time on it. When you can post some pictures of the dash/interior. Yes, I agree it will go great with your 67!! |

It actually made me sick, thinking how much prettier it would have
been if the car was taken care of. 11,000 (if proven) is SUPER rare
and the car should still look showroom new!
How about a picture of the muffler? Is it stamped VW? |

Here are a couple more photos...
The underside has no dirt or road grime, but the humid conditions in the barn were not kind to the interior . Everything is completely intact, even the top of the rear seat and the hold-down strap has never been used!
As for the mileage, I have the dealer stamped/dated book with the mileage, service records and Vehicle Safety Inspection records from the Division of Florida Highway Patrol which all document that the mileage is true. (However, given the condition of the undercarriage it is pretty evident to me anyway.)
The muffler has a big VW logo on it in between the tailpipes. Unfortunately, the back of the car was near the barn door and rainwater seeped in and caused the muffler and tailpipes to rust. EZ fix though. It still has the factory-installed shocks (they dont work very well though...go figure? )
Can you imagine if this car had been PROPERLY stored what it would look like?? Ah, well, at any rate, it will get a full cosmetic resto in time and look just like new again!! _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

This is an original Florida car, I have the 1965 license plate from when it was originally titled. It is a "D2" tag designation. "D" is for smaller passenger cars, and "2" denotes Duval county (Jacksonville). I am going to try to get it re-registered to the car since it is over 30 years old.
It was stored in a barn in south GA since 1980.
Perhaps we can meet up once I get it going...

Yes, this car was in TheSamba classifieds. There was a lengthy delay in the sale because the original title was misplaced. Everything is worked out and all offical now... and well worth the wait!
Per a prior request, here is a photo of the two cars together...
You will notice the bumbers need rechroming and there is a little ding in the right front fender (by the three little specs of rust ) The wheels were chrome, but they are now shot, too. I will get them rechomed or replaced. Check out the size of that whitewall - sheesh!! _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Very interesting also how they used the 1964 "Cord" pattern upholstery
instead of the 1965 "Mesh" pattern. Is it a very early 65 #?
Or is that actually cloth and not leatherette?

wonderful find! Congratulations on the purchase and with your plans to keep it original.
A local friend here in NY has a totally original red '64 sedan which came out of Texas (the Mel Croan VW dealer). It also has the same under-dash A/C unit, painted in car color just like yours. But his car does not have the A/C hardware in the engine compartment anymore. The car was featured in a VW Beetle calender in '99 put out by "Brown Trout", photo'd by Jay Hirsch.
If you have a good car restorer nearby, I wonder if there is a technique in which your seats and headliner can be cleaned up, possibly dyed and reused. Most of the repro things out there are not fully original style. It'd be a shame to ditch those items on your car if they are not physically torn/ripped. |
