On here and on the Ultimate Subaru Message board (of which I'm a member as well) I've noticed a trend:
Here you'll sometimes see pictures of someone's Bug, Ghia or Bus and in the background you'll catch the fender, taillight or other item obviously of a Subaru. Same is true in reverse for many pictures on the Ultimate Subaru Message Board.
How bout it? Who out there finds themselves with this combination of vehicles? Once you go flat-4 you never go back? Do you buy brand new Subarus instead of brand new VWs because of the flat-4 and VW "lost its way" in '75 with the Golf's I-4? _________________ '72 Ghia Coupe

In my circles, many of the folks who own old VW buses also own old BMW motorcycles. Same same but different. |

We have a '05 Outback Sport that we bought new. We wouldn't even consider a new VW. Still to much taint on that company after the strongarm tactics on the hobbyists a few years ago.
I don't think our decision to get a Subaru was based on anything 'VW', we just wanted a reliable AWD vehicle. |

Outback Sport, eh? Good choice, I've owned two ('02 and my current '97).
I recently asked on the Subaru board about what old Subaru would be a good, reliable and easy-to-work on car for a daily driver. I said I just got an old VW and was learning a lot about doing repairs on my own.
I was surprised to find many say my '97 Outback Sport was simple enough to work on myself about as much as the VW. I think I'd been assuming Subaru, like VW and many other car companies, had gradually made their vehicles more and more complex over time until you simply can't work on 'em yourself.
But, apparently Subaru has done a good job of keeping their mechanical and electrical stuff sound and simple over time. _________________ '72 Ghia Coupe

what subaru site are you talking about?
I am interested in buying a later '90's Outback model to replace our '03 Nissan X-Terra.

My brother used to have an aircooled VW and a couple of newer Subarus. He's a Subaru guy, and just bought a new 2006 Outback.
As for me, I have an aircooled VW and a 2004 Passat Wagon. I've also owned a Porsche and an Audi, so I'm more of a German car guy.
I'll never disrespect a Subaru - they're well-made, and reliable. I have to say, though, having driven both the 2006 Subaru and the 2004 Passat, I prefer the Passat. I find that it handles better than the Subaru, and that the VW gets slightly better gas mileage. The interior is more spacious in the VW (back seat has significantly more leg room, and cargo area is larger). I also like the interior layout & style of the VW - ergonomics are designed and layed out better, and quality of leather interior in the VW is better than in the Subaru. Sound system is also better in the VW. I do envy some of the things in the Subaru, though. It's got the Passat beat with it's giant sunroof. I also like the 17" wheels. This is, of course, my own opinion.
Will have to see how both cars hold up over time - so far no problems with either. |

What was this all about? I have heard this brought up a few times and don't really know what happened.
Sorry for the hijack. My next new car will be a subaru. Also my Baja and my super will be subaru powered. _________________

VW hired some overzealous lawyers to clamp down on their trademark misuse. They ran through the internet and found anyone using a VW logo, VW in their URL, using a VW car in their ads, etc. and demanded compensation in the thousands of dollars in most cases. They also nailed some hobbyists that made clocks from VW hubcaps and other pieces of artwork (mugs) with "VW trademarks" on them.
A lot of vendors got hurt. VW refuses to license parts needed by the hobbyist and won't produce them themselves, either. |

Only an old one, or a new one if you have the money to maintain that thing.
The pre-80's were the shiz; post-80's are horrible if you are looking for high miles.
Even if I had the money, I'd buy something else. _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Yeah, or ebay...
I was hoping for more of a "Samba-like" place for Subaru's. I'm sure that doesn't even exist.... _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

I know there are hobbyist out there... But if you are looking to get a 'virgin' car that hasn't been "riced and raced", get a granny's car with a decent price and lower miles and then find your forum! _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Ha.
I cannot believe that there is no g-damn subaru's out there...
The only one I found on AutoTrader (yes, there was only one) is 160,000 miles, '96 Subaru Outback Wagon, $4,900?
I guess these things hold their resale value... _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

I've owned several Subarus and own one now my daughter drives.
Reliable, not too horribly difficult to work on. Engine comes out easily if you need it to.
They are great little cars. |
