|
|
Well as some of you may be aware, I have searched high and low since January to find the proper Windsor fabric for the seats in my '65 (GB, Germany, Canada, US... all zip, zero, nada ) I contacted a few weavers and no takers on reproducing it. I have just about decided to go with a '59 blue/black/grey/white stripe fabric from Himmelservice in Germany, because it will complement my original vinyl (I am going to reuse both the original light blue vinyl and two different size original welting - I found a person who will carefully take the seat covers apart and restitch them with the new fabric)
HOWEVER!! I just got word today from SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon that they can reproduce my original fabric (I sent them a good size sample). They have a minimum quantity required for special orders and these cars only need about 4 yards of fabric (per Himmelservice) to do the seating areas. I will likely order at least the minimum quantity, because I would much rather have the original material reproduced. I can always keep the excess and sell it later. I was just curious if anyone else might be interested in getting some of this material, too. It will be a lot cheaper to buy it while the loom is already set up for this material and they can just run that much more. I dont have a price per yard yet, but their other ready-made fabric runs from $79-$89 per yard. Thus, I would suspect that the special order will be $100-$110 (???) I can find out for sure on Monday, but for now, if anyone else is interested in this material, let me know so I can get you a price, and if interested, add it to the order.
Here are a couple of photos. The factory photo shows the Windsor fabric swatch on the left, though the color is not apparent. It is an off white (greyish white) base with wedgewood bluish-grey stripes.
Happy V-dubbing !

use your search phone and call lenny copp at west coast classic resto. he may have that goofy material he has the 64 only brown striped and also the 64 blue striped material or get the TMI to make seat covers using the bus fabric to look close. _________________ Admin note: Bill Passed away - July, 2017

That's awesome. I have a 65 Bahama Blue, I might be interested in some of that fabric. _________________ '65 Beetle |

PO put some black basket weave covers on it. I took the rears off, an they look like the vinyl weaved material to the right of that windor material. I'll get some pics. _________________ '65 Beetle |

Is that not just plain mesh grey?
WolfsburgWest, I believe, are the only people I could find it from and it seems like maybe just material to have the covers locally sewn was nearly as expensive as the whole interior from TMI.
I am still stalled in my project, so I cannot speak on the durability/quality of this decision, but from aesthetic and comfort standpoints (two-tone w/ cloth inserts) it seems to have been a logical choice
good luck! _________________ Lacroix?! Christian Lacroix?!?!?!!? |

your interior is definitely mesh, although i'm not sure exactly what color it could be. I have a sea blue 65 and TMI did quite a close match with mine.

Juan! Where ya been, man? You know, it just dawned on me your interior is leatherette! I don't know why I thought it was fabric . That's why you don't have the three "dimples" in the seat cushions - it was only in the fabric seats . Still, your seats look very nice! _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

I spoke with Doug at SMS today. He said that they have the proper equipment to duplicate my "goofy" seat fabric in detail. We talked at length and I emailed several photos of the door panels, seat vinyl, paint color, and in-place fabric in addition to the big sample I mailed in. They can replicate the texture, colors and striping as nearly as possible. I sent a deposit and the designer will get to work on it and send me a sample when they get a sample worked up. Doug told me that once we agree on the "final" sample they will run a full roll and keep it in stock until the roll runs out. The cool thing is, my "special order" won't cost any more per yard than the materials they currently have in stock. Sweet !! It will be several months, but it will certainly be worth the wait if I can get a quality reproduction!! (It's a nutty purist thing !)

i'm really not sure of the actual name for them. wolfsburg west sent me samples and we went from there. i said "the mesh material is dead on but the vinyl is darker than the original. send me the most immediate lighter shade you have available." they did, i compared and then said "ok that's it, combine those two to make the seats covers." then they told tmi and tmi did it. _________________ Instagram: @juanskombi

My '64 Bahama Blue still has the original material under the seats. It's only visible because the original vinyl on top of the rear seat is dry/ripped. They were re-upholstered way back who-knows-when, and it seems the upholstery shop just put a different material over all the seat faces. I still don't know what shape the material is in underneath, as I haven't restored the seats...yet. _________________ www.zwerks.ca |

(Edited, here are photos.) It is definitely the Windsor fabric shown in the photo at the top of this post. The current material covering it is a blue perforated vinyl. The main reason I remember is when I had collector status plates on the car a few years back. Here in BC you must send in a required # of photos showing front, back, side, interior, engine, views etc. to prove the car as original and period-correct. I even sent a memo explaining the seat covers and how original material was made of unobtainium, etc. and the current state was in "the spirit of" the original type. Of course, I don't think it mattered to them either way and the plates were issued.
Enjoy! _________________ www.zwerks.ca |
