|
|
My 69 has been resting since 95. Since I got her back out, I've started repairing the things I could find wrong. I'm down to blinkers and I remember they did not work right since early 90's. The emergency flasher switch came apart (top popped off) and I thought that might have something to do with it.
After I put t back together, strange things started happening. The rear defrost relay cycling when you push the flasher button in (to turn it off) and stops cycling when you pull the knob out (turning it on). I think something is wired wrong
I've looked at the schematic for 69 up to July and it does not look right. Late 69+ does not really look right either.
Can anyone tell anything by the following pics? This is driving me nuts being bent over under that hood for so long tonight.
First off...what is this?
This is the flasher relay right? Is it wired right?
I know what this part is....this is how it was wired when it came out...is it right though?
This is how the terminals are labled
I appreciate any help with this. |

You're not the first to be confused by the wiring diagram on a 69. When VW changed the wiring in late 1968, they never updated the diagram in their manuals. Not until 1970. So you'll need to refer to the 1970 wiring diagram, which shows the flasher circuit. The car isn't wired all the same though, so you'll also have to refer to the fusebox diagram from the 1969 owner's manual. Links:

Okay your other questions -
The first box you have pictured, is the headlight high/low beam relay.
The 2nd box, yes it's the turn signal relay and yes it does look wired right.
The E-flasher switch, that one I think you have the red/black/white(30/15/+) wires hooked up wrong.
As for the defrost relay under the back seat going like it does, that's weird. None of the wires that go from the little toggle under the dash should connect to the flashers. Except for power supply to the defronster switch itself. If the switch is off then the relay should not be on at all.

Thanks Andy.
I forgot to mention that I think the defrost relay is just possessed.
To mke it cycle, you can turn ignition ON and e-flasher OFF OR you can turn ignition OFF and e-flasher ON. Either way, the defrost goes clickity-click, but the blinkers don't go blinkity-blink. |

Check the wires going to the two terminals on the defrost toggle switch. One should come from fuse number one, the other goes from the switch to the light in the speedometer head then from there to the relay. With the switch turned off there should be absolutely no current path for the relay to be activated. And when it's is activated, the defrost light will be coming on, assuming that bulb is good. Sounds like a wire got connected wrong in there somehow.

You were correct. The wires were backwards on 15 & 30 at the e-flasher switch.
The flasher relay had wires K and 49a backwards causing the backfeed to the defrost relay.
Now I have e-flashers, but still no blinkers. I noticed several wires spliced together with butt connectors coming from the harness out of the column. I don't remember ever changing out the ignition switch or blinker switch, but it was 10 years ago and there is A LOT I dont remember from my early 20's
I'm going to start on the blinker switch with the meter. Maybe I cross wired something while in a "hippie haze"

good luck man!.... I just redid ALL of the wiring in Brandi because the PO straight wired almost everything... I had to go between 3 different wiring diagrams to decode what pieces I had.... took me about 14 hours all together.... shoulda just ordered a new harness.... _________________ '68 bug (Sadie)
