It's a real B!TCH to get the fan shroud off with the engine in.
But you can remove the alternator and leave the shroud in... here's how.
Remove the wires, fan belt and half of the pulley. Reach around the front of the engine and put a 36mm socket with a 3" extension and a breaker bar on the fan nut. Use a large adjustable wrench in the remaining half of the pulley and crank the nut loose. Now remove the alternator strap and the 4 bolts holind thebacking plate to the fan shroud. Tilt the alternator so you can gain access to the 2 10mm nuts and remove them. now pull the alternator out.
To reinstall, just doeverything in reverse. Make sure the fan nut is tight or it might come loose. _________________ Glenn

Don't forget the in the front on the "Hoover Bit". And you have to disconnect the thermostat. _________________ Glenn

It's that small piece of tin that missing on 95% of the engines. It closes off the gap between the oil cooler and the fan shroud.

What should you torque the 36mm nut to? |

Glen, I tried your method but the nut in the back did not budge. Colud not get it loose to save my life. I did exactly what you said and nothing! I used a 12'' adjustable wrench at the front and the 36mm with the breaker bar in the rear. could not use the 3" extension because the firewall would not le me use it.
Any other suggestion besides taking the whole thing out? Then again, that posses another problem, what can I use to hold the a;lternator so it would not move while loosing it. I do not have a vise-grip.

There is a slot on the upper pulley to stick a large flat bladed screwdriver in. That will keep it from moving while loosening the fan nut. _________________

Did that. The nut do not want to get loose. And I am a heavy guy, 240lbs of pressure should have done the job, but nothing. |

The only other way to get it off would be to pull the engine.
That nut should only be torqued to 44ft lbs. Somone in the past must have used an Impact Wrench to tighten it down. _________________

I was thinking about that. It is too tough to get loose. I should turn counterclockwise to get it loose, right? |

Just loosen the fan shroud and you can wiggle it up to a position where you can get the alternator out with the fan on it. If someone has used a numatic wrench to put it on then getting it off could be a real PITA. _________________ The Old Speed Shack |

Still, if I take the fan shroud, I am going to need something else to hold the whole thing and balance it. Hard to do it by myself. And the mechanic I know wants to charge me $120. Her says it take 2 hrs and it is too difficult to R&R. Oh, well. I will keep charging my battery until I find a better way to do it. |

I did it by my self with some small blocks to hold up the shourd while i took out the alternator. Really not that hard at all. Just have every thing ready to come out when you loosen the shroud... and take off your carb. _________________ The Old Speed Shack |
