|
|
i purchased a roofrack a week ago that looks nothing like any of the ones i usually see. i cant read the logo thats stamped into it yet, but it was built in munchen, Germany. the logo is a circle with an H on the top, and an M on the bottom, and some text in the middle. i'll take pictures in the next few days.
the wood slats are gone, but i'm not worried about reproducing them. its the rivets i'm worried about. i want to take the rack apart and get it sand blasted, then powdercoated. the rivets are not simple pop rivets, and i need to figure out how or what to replace them with. has anyone done any kind of rivet works, or had a rack restored/ restored one personally?
TIA |

If it's anything like my original VW rack those are hard rivets. They would have been attached with a tool like a press.
I've replaced a slat in mine and I notched the slat so it would fit with the rivet. |

I'll second that, they have alot of good German parts in stock. They cost a little more, but soooo worth it! |

thats the place. or if you have a farm/hardware place you can just match up the rivits for less. i looked at the kit today and it has rivits and other hardware that i dont think would fit that rack. nice looking rack anyways |

I own what must be the sedan version of that rack, its missing one of the clamps (same style as pictured), and it uses the rubber suction cup feet which are embossed with "Herkules" as well, I made a copy of these since I was also missing one of the cups. Hoping to replicate the missing clamp this winter so I can install the rack next summer.
Thanks for posting the catalog shot, that helps to validate these as period rare roof racks! Occasionally I thumb through the Foreign Car magazines of the 50's and 60's and I'm frankly amazed at the hundreds of things I discover that were made for these cars in addition to the the Hella, Perohaus, GHE Happich, Kamei, and other accessory makers.

Here's mine, and I would agree that with the suction cups what you really get is more of a universal roof fit, nice advantage if you had owned a couple different cars at home. This rack however I have is about the same size as a factory vw rack. Theres another closer shot of the wood in my gallery with specs on how to make replacements fyi.
