Is it possible to fit side draft carbs onto a 2.0L kombi engine, i was looking at an old type3 manual and it seemed that there was a model with single solex side draft carb on it, but ive never seen one before, could you put twin side draft carbs on a kombi? Are there there any performance differences between side and downdraft carbs, the main difference i can see is the cost, side drats seem to be heaps cheaper, has anyone done this conversion, any information on this would be greately appreciated. |

hmmm wouldn't the air have to make a sharp 90 degree turn? rather than a straight shot? I see a lot of turbo people use these side draft carbs. _________________ 1972 Standard Beetle

True, early T3's had a single Solex sidedraft, I don't know of any other VW that came with a factory sidedraft.
In the 80's there was a kit sold to install a single sidedraft on a Type 1 based upright engine (just like a IDF/DRLA single centermount).
I can recall seeing 2 cars featured in Hot VW's with these setups.
Of course none of this helps you if your engine is a Type 4 _________________ Richard Sedoris - VW Performance & Machine - Youngstown, OH

hmm interesting, to me that looks like a setup from a vw based aircraft, This website sells single barrel Zenith carbs for airplanes, as well as some really neat watercooled cylinder heads for type 1 engines.

Here's a Bing sidedraft carb installation on an aircraft VW:
The Bing carb used to come stock on BMW opposed twin motorcycles.
I've toyed with the idea of two Bing or Mikuni motorcycle carbs on a VW engine, but decided that my efforts would be better put in EFI systems. |
