Specs. of tire, wheel, and suspension - Lowered Buses

Ok, I have spent hours going over lowering threads and now armed
with the concepts and lingo I can't find pictures of the finished look
and information all in one thread.

I am in the planning stages of lowering my bus and would like to see
what your bus looks like and specifications on your mods.

Please post a side or angled picture of your lowered bus and specs:
-Tire make and size.
-Wheel make, size or offset.
-Spindle drop, beam narrowed dimensions. Who's?
-Strait axle, spring plate mods. Who's?
-Tubbed, cut tortion, IRS, etc..
-Raised box, tie rod flip.
-Brakes, shocks.
-If I ever do this again I would have...........

165-45-15 on the front. 195-50-15 on the rear with correct dated for my bus stock rims.

Nates 4in beam with adjusters an drop spindles.

68 Type 1 tranny with Nates spring plates.

No tubs or steeringbox raise.

2" narrowed and adjustable beam (by me), Dropped spindles (by me), Straight axle (butcher shop), Spring plates cut about double normal amount with the cut metal welded to the other side for strength (by me), stock bus brakes all around w/machined snout, crowsfoot wheels up front with Kumho 195/45/15, non crowsfoot wheels out back w/ 3/8" spacer with Michelin 195/60/15, KYB white shocks all around with extended mounting perches front and rear.

If I were to do it again I'd powdercoat all the suspension, buy the CB performance tierod flip kit instead of welding and retapering the spindle, go for the 165/45/15 tires up front (will do eventually).

My single biggest piece of advice to you when you do this is to replace everything. Center pin, tie rod ends, seals, drag link, steering dampener, all of it. It'll cost more but you'll have a super tight setup.

Man, I forgot about tubbing the wells.
Also, I read someone in Japan narrowed his rear tortion
to get some fat tires in there. Anyone tried that?

Type 1 I.R.S. in the rear
Brakes are stock Bus drum in the front and stock Type 1 with 4 to wide 5 lug adapters in the rear
All done by me...
As for tires 165 45/15 in the front and 185 55/15 in the rear

I've got a narrowed rear torsion tube,not my idea,it was like that when I bought it from a guy in AZ.(anyone know this bus?)
Trans is stock Type 3 swingaxle,fitted with 944 discs,and 5.5" Porsche spacesaver spares,the tyres are 195x65x15,the rims ET34 Shocks are KYB Gasadjust.

At the front i'm on a 64-67 beam,dropped spindles with adjusters, running 944 discs,again porsche spacesaver steel rims,only this time ET 53,tyres are 185x55x15s.Front shocks are gas cofaps.Also running an antiroll bar.

I have a 65 riviera. Front has stock beam with drop spindles by Tom Conner. Stock brakes and KYB GR2 shocks. Tires are 195/60/15 Toyo on stock bus wheels. Rear is straight axle kit by longroofs with 60's beetle tranny and long axles built by Mitch at The shop, Sandpoint ID. Tubes lengthened by Multitrail Enterprises, here in Sandpoint ID. Stock 68 bug rear brakes with late beetle front wheel cylinders. 4-5 lug adapters from Wolfgang (I think they are 1/2" thick) with stock 15" bus wheels that I had the offset changed. I had the inner section cut out and moved outward about 5/8" which is about the max you can do with the stock VW outer hoops. All this was done by Watt Wheel in Spokane, Wa. All this was done to give me enough room to fit a wider and taller tire in the stock wheelwell. I am currently running a 205/65/15 rear tire. Plenty of clearance between tire and spring plate as well as tire and fender lip. They fill up the hole nicely and look better than the rubber bands I see often on busses. The rear height is adjusted so that when there is no extra load, (no camping gear, kid, dog, single wheel trailer) it sits slightly higher than the front. It has just a slight rake. I run the KYB GR2 on the rear also.

If I had it to do over I would have the rear wheels widened to 5.5 or 6 inches with the same (non-stock) offset. I may change the rear tire size if the gearing seems too tall, but I am in the break-in period of a new 1776 right now (also built right by Mitch at The Shop) so I haven't driven it over any passes yet or any long distances. I am considering building a 2-4 inch narrowed adjustable beam and installing bay window discs with small 5 to wide 5 adapters and full power assist. I may go to rear discs, too. I may also change to the KYB gas-adjust shocks, on the recommendation of some here on the samba. Especially on the front as it seems easy to bottom out the front tires on the wheel well over large bumps and I understand the white shocks are a little stiffer.

I do most of my own work but some things are best farmed out to those who have the skills and equipment to do it better than I.
