|

I have stock alloy wheels on my Syncro. The lugs come up a bit short. Any idea why? Could it be that the camper came with steel wheels and they require a shorter lug?

Have a look at loogy's 'The DEFINITIVE Wheel and Tire Thread.' I'm going to all studs on Winston, you can read the details there.

I'd bet that it originally came with the steelies. If factory equipped with the alloys. it would have had the correct longer studs/lugs. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Do you have the proper bolts and nuts for the alloy wheels?
There is no difference in length of the studs, the taper of
the alloy nuts/bolts is much steeper than the steel wheel bolts/nuts. |

I have the proper nuts. It did not have them when I bought it. The bolts may have been replaced at some time. _________________ 66 Panel < 40,000 mi.

How much should it cost per stud to have these replaced? _________________ 66 Panel < 40,000 mi.

Wheels from a bay window fir perfectly.
Since I've got Audi 15 inchers to go on someday, the VW alloys are now available.
Any trading stock out there?
e.g.
good 15" load rated tires in exchange for aluminum alloys, steel wheels and some 14" Yokos... _________________ 66 Panel < 40,000 mi.

I've never messed with vanagon alloys but the lug nuts for steel wheels are very differant from lugs for alloys:
Alloy lug nuts:
notice how they go into the wheel holes.
steel lug nuts:
they are tapered at the bottom to fit into the thin steel wheel holes which should be tapered to.
So if you are trying to use steel nuts on much thicker alloys the studs might seem to short, plus it doesn't hold them very well. |
