bucket, i'm seriously thinking of drilling some leds into an after market lens I found. It would definatly be a good idea, I can't tell you how many times i've seen cars in my rearview mirror get so close when I am braking Shocked I don't want to use "LED bulbs" I plan on actually drilling and fitting some LED's into the lense from the inside.

from the information page:

"LED bulbs are generally not as bright as standard incandescent bulbs, they have many advantages over filament bulbs (longer life, faster on/off times, lower power consumption, more vivid colors) but brightness is not one of them. "

i think its a good idea, as i live where people cant drive for shit.

At the NW Goodguys show two years ago, there was a vendor there selling the lights mounted and ready to install in snow flakes. Keep looking, they are out there.

I'd try these.

Back in the day before they made LED Flashlights i had an idea on how to make one. This same idea could be used for Automotive bubs as well. If your up for a little DIY project here is the info:

I just took a regular bulb and smashed out the glass. then i scraped out the junk on the inside. After that you just have to solder out the old tip. cut and bend your LED's to length and solder them in. it took a few trys to get it right and the bulb in the picture was my first try. I then made them better buy adding a 4th bulb and forming it into a square pattern. I made them over 5 years ago and i have 1 still in use today in a mag light.

I'm sure you can find them already made but what is the fun in that?

I might just have to make up a few sets for a VW. you will have to use a few more led's. Just remember to use RED LED's because the tail light lens will filter out all but the red color.

That's a good idea, but, it's an insert that goes behind the lens. The led will still have to be seen through the glass of the lens. I'm still going try to make one where the led is fitted inside the lens material so, in theory, that should make it even brighter.

I'm going to do the same thing. I saw this on the German Look Forum.

The guy had a place called TAP Plastics build the bases. They are made of 2 pieces of 1/4" clear red Lexan. They cut them out and glued them together for him, as the process is a little tricky, bubbles form between the 2 pieces.

He trimmed the edges to fit it the houseing, then marked the pattern and drilled holes with a smaller bit then a larger so the LEDs have a stop.

The outside are red, the center one is Royal Purple

That is pretty slick, however keep in mind that the OG lens as well as all car tail lights acts as a reflector as well. That way cars will see your car parked on the side of the road or if it is getting dark and your lights are not on. With this setup your car could very well be "invisible" while parked on the side of the road or when it is getting dark.
