I'm posting this as an invitation and information request. I've secretly purchased a Dune Buggy to spend the day at the beach with my girlfriend for her Birthday. What would make it so much cooler is a day of "Buggies at the Beach". This does not limit what VW's show up...I'd love to see all kinds of VW's there. Candace celebrates her birthday on August 2nd so I'm looking at August 4th which is a Saturday. I know you can drive on Daytona Beach but I'm not sure about parking there. I'd really like to have a big Picnic Party and a loosely organized hangout. If you are at all interested please contact me via email at [email protected]. I live 22 miles south west of Gainesville, Florida so it's a little travel for me to get over to the east coast. If you live in the Daytona area I'd really appreciate any information you can provide to me. Candace has no idea that I have planned anything so I'd love for it to be a really cool surprise! Thanks everyone! Sincerely, Jerad Pitts |

Thanks Joe, I had planned on contacting the DB crew. The Sonic Drive at the beginning of the year in Daytona was the first event I had ever taken my 66 Beetle to. A bunch of nice guys out that way. It'd be really cool to have the group there. I also have VW friends in the Tallahassee area that I'm inviting. Please keep me updated! |

She doesn't get on Samba for much of anything but to look up the convertible beetles and drool on them! I do all of the parts hunting. I'm pretty certain she won't find this listing. If you think you're interested in coming out I'm trying to get a list of people and their cars I can expect to hopefully see. I'll try to get a picture of "Hot Sauce" posted up here. I'm working on getting a bimini top made for it. |

I'll go. I doubt I'll have my buggy going... unless I throw that beast together really fast and don't paint it and find a transaxle and motor and and and and... |

Well here is my newest VW. He's named "Hot Sauce" by the PO. I like the name so I'm going to maintain it. If anyone knows who made this kit and what it's called I'd like to know. Hot Sauce has a 1500 SP engine with low compression so I'm going to do a little work on him to get him going right before the Buggies on the Beach gig. |

Okay I've done some more research for "Birthday and Buggies on the Beach" Using the following website: http://volusia.org/beach/ I've been able to better understand the rules and such for driving and parking on the beach. At this time of year the beach opens up at 8:00 a.m and closes at 7:00 p.m. to traffic. I'm planning on getting there between 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. so that I'm not waiting for someone to open the gates. It's a $5.00 fee to park and drive on the beach for the day. I have some family planning to come hang out so bring yours along as well. Diving a VW is not a requirement for this hangout! If you do drive your VW please try to park next to another VW. It would be cool for this to turn out like a mini show! As far as lunch I'm planning a "Picnic" at about 12:00 noon with food for my own group. Feel free to bring your lunch as well. There should also be grocery stores nearby. Please remember that there are no glass containers or alcohol allowed on the beach. After lunch we'll have a Birthday Cake for my girlfriend Candace as part of her surprise. I figure I'll probably wrap up our day around 2:00p.m. or 3:00p.m. I'm hoping the day goes great with nice weather. I'm also hoping that a good number of VW's show up to hang out to help celebrate Candaces birthday. She loves the beach and I really wanted to get something cool planned for her 22nd birthday. Please post in this forum or email me at [email protected] to let me know if you would like to show up and hang out. This is an all ages welcome event so bring the family! |

After a little more research I realized that there is no traffic allowed on the beach going north between International Speedway Boulevard all the way up to Seabreeze Boulevard. Here is a list of the roads with access to the beach from south to north: Glenview, Riverview, University, Zelda, Williams, Harvard, and Cardinal. Both University Blvd. and Zelda Blvd. show on the map that there are no public restrooms available. All the other roads show restrooms with off beach parking at Harvard Drive and a Lifeguard Station at Cardinal Drive. All of this information was found on the Volusia County Website I hyperlinked in the Main Events listing. On another side note I just wanted to again mention that all VW's are welcome, both Air and Watercooled. I've got no idea which road will provide access to the best spot on the beach so I'm planning on cruising up and down the beach a couple times before deciding on the best spot that's not already taken. I'm looking forward to this and I hope some of you VW fans are also. Maybe "Hippie" and his wife will show up in his cool hightop camper van. Feel free to email or PM me. Thanks! BTW... here is my Beetle which I'll be cruising over to Daytona in. I'm having someone else bring "Hot Sauce" to the Beach |

Hey RAMZROD!!!! How's it going dude...yes I remember you. Wish you could make it out. As things would have it Candace says she's unable to take off that day...the 4th. I told her I had plans for her that day. I'm looking at rescheduling this event for August 11th or the 18th. I've not totally decided which of them yet so I have not emailed Everett about it. I hope a date change would make it possible for you or others to hang out. I'm even considering a campout afterwards but not I'm too sure about it. Tell all your buddies about this! Later dude! |

You should also consider having it at one of the parks located on the
beach, rather then directly onthe beach. I know a few VW's that wont
go directly on the sand. There are a couple of parks that are beachfront. _________________ www.DaytonaWinterJam.com

Vujade, I knew that there would be those that would not want to park or drive right on the beach. From the map I looked at there is off beach parking at Harvard Drive. I'll need to check it out though to see if it's close enough to the beach. I also just got an email from the Wolfsburg Kreuzers about the Sonic Cruise on the 28th...... next Saturday. I think it will be a good day for investigation of possible locations. Please drop some suggestions I can check out. I'd love to occomodate as many VW's as possible to get a bigger crowd. Thanks sincerely for the suggestion. |

Well I just wanted to drop in a line to update this event in the list. So far this is looking pretty low key in the way of VW's. Right now it's looking like it's going to be my Sea Blue 1966 Beetle, "Hot Sauce" the 1973 Kyote Clone Dune Buggy and Hippie with his Purple and Rust colored Turbo Rail. The rest is going to be family and friends. I'll be down on the beach with my cars. If anyone else is willing to drive on packed beach sand then come on down. I mentioned there was some off beach parking at Harvard. I was unable to check it out when I drove over for the Sonic Drive In on the 28th. If it's close enough I'll try to park next to it so those that don't want to drive their VW's on the sand can park there. Come out and hang out. See you there. |

Update on "Hot Sauce". Today I took his engine off the stand and it's now on the floor jack. Tomorrow I'm going to pop it back in and test it out. I put new pistons and cylinders on the engine and gave it a good cleaning on the heads. They looked pretty good with no cracks and no valve wear. |

Do you know whereabout you are going to be on the beach? They have a quarter mile of the beach closed due to some protected birds. There are three of us in buggies who are probably going to be there. Did you get yours running?
BTW, I wouldn't take that beetle on the beach if you value it at all. 10 minutes on the beach for an old car is like 20 years elsewhere. A good wash job doesn't help much. JMHO At least you can build a buggy out of it when the body rusts off. |

Hi Jerad,
I saw you at the last Sonic meet, I'm the one with yellow Baja that night. I just realizesd who you were and I just saw your post about holding the Beach and Buggies at the beach.
There are three county parking areas, which are pretty nice. This would work out for ppl who don't want to park their vdub on the beach (don't blame them, i've lived here long enough to know about the rust). These are free parking areas, so they are popular for ppl who don't want to pay to drive and park on the beach. Not to mention the sand and salt. The places you mentioned are beach ramps and most of them have limited parking. So if ppl don't make it there early enough, it would make it difficult for a group parking.
The first one in Daytona Beach is Sun Splash Park. Its about two blks south of International Speedway drive (US-92) on A1A, on the right side (beach side of A1A). This is not a bad spot, it's also in the area where they closed off the driving part to protect some bird. Normally there is driving in this area on the beach. There is plenty of parking but you would need to get there early to reserve the parking. Very popular place to hang out (make sure everything is locked up good). There are showers, bathroom, covered picnic area and a fountain park for the kids to play around in. There are about 50 or so parking spots there. The following link gives more info.
http://volusia.org/parks/front.htm#sun
The next one is Frank Rendon Park in Daytona Beach Shores. This is a little further down south on A1A, about 4 miles down from International Speedway. Does not get quite as crowded as Sun Splash but it does get filled up. Also plenty of parking (about 100 spaces) showers, picnic area and grilling. It's also pretty nice, there is beach driving. Following link gives more info
http://volusia.org/parks/front.htm#rendon
The third spot might be nicest. Tom Renick park, it's about 3-4 miles north of S.R.40 (Granada Blvd.) on A1A. If you are coming from the Gainesville area go east on 40 - all the way to A1A then turn left on A1A (north). It's smaller then the other two so parking goes quick. Also has the same amenities as the others, showers, tables and bathroom. Anything north of 40 (Granada Blvd.) is a non-driving area on the beach (way to soft). I like this park but it's a way from everything. It's very scenic drive to this area. Going north on A1A is a great drive, all the way to St. Augustine.
http://volusia.org/parks/front.htm#renick
I hope this helps you out. I don't know if I can make it yet. I maybe busy, but I'll try to do a drive by in my Baja. Good luck with the birthday arrangements. |
